Default And so it begins!

so i started a thread before i bought the car asking just general questions about it. this thread will be my fix/solution thread so i can keep up with everything!

on top of the antenna and clock not working, today my drivers side window got stuck half way down. local window guy said they are notorious for having problems.

just mainly a growing thread about my complaints, nothing more!

and yes, i knew what i was getting into buyin a 22 year old car

so whats the deal with the air in these things. i see that stock they are r12 but can be converted to 134. i don't see anything under the hood that resembles a conversion. i also see that getting r12 is next to impossible and would be expensive even if i could.

so what am i looking at as far as conversion?

and maybe its just an illusion, but i swear that the air is blowing colder on the 2 right vents then it is on the 2 left ones!

You can get a conversion kit at a parts store for about 40 bucks, I think. If it's already been converted, there will be a sticker and an adapter screwed onto the valve.

well every shop i seem to talk to about converting the ac to 134 is giving me different things i need to do.

some are saying i need to replace the dryer and some aren't. some are saying to replace the o-rings and some aren't.

the local shop that just deals with hondas/acuras quoted $300 parts and labor and includes the low pressure switch, oil, freon, o-rings, and fittings.

another local place said that unless the compressor is compatible it too will need be replaced.

so my question is, what REALLY needs to be swapped.

It's not a bad idea. They'll evacuate the R12 legally, then pump down the system to make sure there's no air or moisture before adding the R134a. If you have the scratch, it will save you the hassle of doing the conversion yourself. I bought the kit once for my '90, but never got around to putting it in.

yeah i wouldn't try this one on my own. im just trying to figure out what needs to be changed as i haven't been given the same answer by anyone i've called.

and just for ***** and giggles i called the honda stealership and of course they say EVERYTHING needs to come out....to the tune of $800-$1200.

anyone heard anything about freeze 12?

quick update: its not as bad as i thought. im sure this isn't the best or most accurate way to test the temp, but i used my digital meat thermometer and when i put it on recirculation it got down to about ~43.....in the right vents. the minute i put it in the middle left vent it shot up at least 8 degrees.

not a big deal but just odd!

edit: ok i just remembered one thing, the far right vent i had closed. so that was pushing more air to the middle right. maybe thats why it was blowing colder

also while im at it, im about down to the last bit on my first full tank. but im no where near what some people are getting as far as mpg.

i'll be lucky if i get 290 miles out of this tank which will translate into roughly 18mpg. i drive 100% around town and here recently with the ac on full blast!

how are some guys getting 25+ around town?
