Got my new rotors/pads installed and bled my breaks and wanted to get the car back on the ground so I decided I would adjust my e-brake.

I followed this procedure in the manual, starting the engine and depressing the brake a bunch of times to self adjust, then loosened off the adjuster nut, pulled the handle one click and tightenned it until the wheels started to drag.



Well my right side wheels lock good and hard with only a few clicks. But the left side doesnt grab or even drag at all. I noticed the pivoting arm under the center console isnt parallel, and is pulling that left wheel even further than the right wheel.




The adjustment nut maxed out and the left wheel still wasnt dragging. So could it be stretched?

The cable end itself is definetely pinned into the rear disc caliper, but couldn anything else be going on wrong back there? The one wheel grabs fine for now, but Id obviously like both to lock up solid for hills and safety and such.

Is there 0 cable tension on the side that isn't grabbing the drum?

 

I did my rear brakes and adjusted my handbrake not 4 days ago and I have the exact same problem. Each rear caliper has a mechanism so that when the ebrake cable is pulled, it rotates a shaft in the caliper which pushes the brake. What I did to test mine is I pushed the linkage at the caliper where the cable connects with a screwdriver. The right side grabbed and the wheel could not turn. The left side did nothing and the wheel was free to move. I believe I have to replace the caliper to rectify this and you probably have to do the same. Hope this helps.

edit: Just remembered I have Integra rear disc brakes, this only applies if you have discs, whether they be CRX or Integra discs.

 

Its definetely not "snap" tight like the right side, but I wouldnt call it loose or slacked

 

Could you possibly modify this pic in MS paint or whatever to show what you pushed with the screwdriver?? Id appreciate it alot.

 

Push in the direction indicated. What you're doing is mimicking the action of the ebrake cable when you do that. If you look at the caliper and get someone to pull and release the handbrake, you'll notice the same thing happens.

PS way to paint your entire caliper without disassembling first. Boots and all.

The calipers were definetely OEM original and never serviced, they were so cruddy and grusome looking. SO yeah I gave them a brake cleaner and wire bursh bath and hit them with the high temp silver when they were off the car, the boots were already cracking and ripped, so I painted them to. I'll probably get new calipers next year if it isnt just the cable thats stretched.

 

I had similar situation and the ebrake cable would not retract. Replaced both rear calipers(re-manufactured) and problem solved.

 

Did a 90-91 DA 2door rear disc swap in my 89 Si. I have this exact symptom now, but I never use my ebrake for anything, so it's not really a "problem". Curious to find an answer though.

 

You don't use your e-brake for parking? Hence - parking brake.

 

Im kinda hoping the cable is just stretched, but both a new caliper and a new line is pretty expensive.

 

There is a procedure you need to follow to set the parking brake mechanism's self-adjusting feature inside the caliper itself. Here it is from the 92 Civic shop manual:

Now do the e-brake cable adjustment procedure. Give that a shot and let us know if it evens out your cables. It worked for me.

 

Ya I did that part first, thats in the crx manual to, I circled it in red in the original post I made at the top.

I leave it in gear with no ebrake.

 

Honda wants close to $125 for just the cable damn! And the calipers he told me he would call me back on he couldnt find the listing

Before you buy anything make sure the e brake cable is not siezed,make sure you can move the cable by disconecting it and see if it slides and then check to stt if the ebrake arm on caliper is moving with pliers.
Narrow things down untill you find which part of the system is giving you the problem before you spend any money.
