Default 2000 Automatic Transmission Acting like it has 5th gear

Hi all,

So I have a question about the automatic transmission in my civic. I don't know if it is necessarily a problem but I just wanted to see if other people know what I am talking about.

When the car is in 4th gear it seems like it kind of has two "modes." It's like when I am cruising around 50ish MPH and I let my foot completely off the gas and push it again the RPMs go up to like 2500 then it locks in around 2k. You can feel it "lock" in. But if I am going 60mph and I do the same thing the RPMs don't ever shoot up they just stay in the right range.

I have also noticed if I start climbing a hill and the car drops from 60mph to say 50 the rpms will raise about 500 almost to compensate for the extra load but it isn't shifting to D3. Does anyone know what I am talking about... Is it normal?

The only article I could find was this one that was similar.

All cars have that o the last gear its yor final drive where the tranny with either lock or unlock the torgue converter depending on load when it feels load like goig up a hill or trying to get up to speed itll lock and the rpms raise

Cool! Thanks for letting me know. I think I just haven't ever noticed in other cars before. (This civic is new to me).
