Default Help a new R owner

What up,

I have many questions, so please bear with me....

I finally imported a 2000CW Canadian ITR this past weekend. Noticed a few strange things. There is no CF dash trim and the shift **** is not titanium. How much CF trim is in the USDM ITR? I only have CF trim on the gauge cluster. Does anyone know where I can get the OEM factory pieces? I was thinking I would maybe buy brushed aluminum trim instead. Do you all think that would look bad? Also, what do you all recommend for aluminum pedals and dead pedals? My foot slides up the clutch pedal often. Are the only good pedals the type that you drill in?

A few more questions, where can I get an undertray or what ever those black plastic pieces are that mount under the lip. Im going to lower my car an inch, and I know im going to accidentally ruin my lip at some point. Here is a pic, I only want the undertray part, I believe the other part is a splitter?
http://www3.telus.net/N1R/pics/100-0046_IMG.JPG

Security Questions, Im going all out here, I want this car for a long long time. My first step is to get autlocks for steering wheel, shifter and pedals. I read about hood locks, relocated hood latches, and fuel kill switches. How does a fuel kill switch work, is this a common install, and how expensive is it. Also, how does a hood lock work, and if I relocated the hood latch how would I open my hood? Third, is any alarm worth the money? I was thinking I would get the anti car jacking alarm that requires a code be entered each time the car is started. And what is ur opinions on lojack, it seems like its works very well if your response time is within a few hours of the cars dissappearance. I assume all these security measures require life modifications and kill convenience, but hey owning a rare CW ITR is worth it right?

Last question, How the hell do you get out the smell of the prior owners feckin cigarettes!!??? I put a pound of baby powder in the ash tray and febreezed the entire thing to no avail. He must have smoked bongs in the car. Ahh well, everything else is mint....

Thanks for all your input, im new to the game and I just got a car that I want to cherish for a long time to come.

THanks!
Aamir

Very nice find by the way... please explain your specific steps in importing the Canadian ITR here to the US... I might want to do that someday if I can't get a 97/98 ITR here in the US since they're disappearing so quickly... and how much?? and for one of your question about the CF trim... you don't need the OEM CF trim... get real CF trim from Comptech or another source... the trim in the ITRs aren't real anyway.. as for security measures.. do you all that you've suggested and then some..

I would suggest an ionic breeze from sharper image used all night, every night and
whenever you are not driving it

Thanks for responses, somewhat helpful...

So NOONE knows where to get the undertray? I should have made separate posts for each question.

For the CF dash kit, i want something that is not shiny, a matte finish like the OEM would be nice. Ill check out the comptech kit, hopefully its like OEM. Does the OEM CF kit cover the a/c vents and door handle areas?

Where did everyone get their autolocks for their cars? That will probably be the single most effective layer of security in my car so I want to get them tonight. I cant sleep at night until I get them.

Somebody asked about importing the car, C-mugenR had it right about contacting an importer/exporter. Your best bet is to contact an importer near the US/Canada border. I went through Watertown, NY and imported the car from Ontario, CA. Buffalo is great also, since Toronto is next door. Search http://www.autotrader.ca for your car, if the seller is a private seller then it wont be too hard. I have a dealer friend in Watertown who buys cars from Canada each month and gets them approved, inspected, and registered all in one day but if you go through an importer the car might have to sit in their lot for 1-4 weeks waiting for approval from DOT, but it never takes more than 4 weeks. The fee will cost anywhere from $100 - $500 for them do all your paper work.

Summary:
find a private seller in Ontario area.
agree on a price
find an import export broker in the border area the car will be coming through.
go over specifics with import broker
get the car across the border, wait for approval
then you have your car, minus any factory warranty.

the reason u need a import broker is because car manufactures will not issue approval papers for cars anymore because they dont want them crossing the border. Customs needs those papers to validate whether the car in question is acceptable for USDM standards. The broker takes care of all this at the border. In addition to the state tax you will pay on your car, you will also pay 2.75% duty tax I believe, and you might have to pay Canadian GST tax, 15%, but that will be refunded when the car crosses border. Like I said, a dealer did all this for me, and I didnt have to pay any fees. If any of you are DEAD serious about doing this, I can put you in contact with this Watertown NY based dealer. You will either direct him to the car you want or you can wait and see if he can find a type R in canada since he goes to a canadian auction 2-3 times a month. You would have to make it worth his while, and he makes it VERY easy to purchase the car, just like buying a car from your neighbor, u worry about no import paper work. I would imagine him charging 18,000-22,000 for a 2000 or 2001.

thanks for the info! that's awesome.. congrats on the R..

just out of curiosity, any idea if it can be imported to other states? maryland is kinda strict on their stuff, but i wonder if the broker/importer could work that out.. mind giving me the contact info for the guy you used? thanks..

also, i'm sure this has been asked before, but aside from the seats and the odometer/speedometer, your car is the same as the USDM ITR, right?

and, to try to answer your question, the cf trim pieces can be found and swapped out with the plain ones you have.. i personally prefer the plain over the fake cf, but it's not my car.. hehe.. check the classifieds, and occasionally on ebay you'll see them.. another route is to get a kit, but make sure you pick out a high quality one.. many seem to look cheesy..

ARC makes those under splitters you are talking about. The only cover the corners.

Get a hood lock, best security device to compliment your alarm. Alarm installation is the key to its effectiveness...a cheap alarm with excellent installation is much better then a good alarm with poor installation.

Hey guys,

N1-R, your cars pics have been my background for a while and have kept my motivation high while I tried to get my car to the states. Sorry if I used your photo with out asking you, I did not remember where I got the photo and I just knew it had the canards that I wanted to use as reference. Your car is off the hizzle I think everyone agrees...My car is BONE STOCK.

I guess I will search around for different dash kits, I dont think brushed aluminum goes well with the vinyl in the car, The OEM kit seems to blend in well, But I will take your suggestions and see other brands etc, hopefully I will find something as inoffensive as the OEM kit and much cheaper.

In terms of importing the car to maryland I dont think it would be any different than New York. All the DMV needs is bill of sale and proof of residence to register your car. The car also needs to be inspected for Maryland standards, the importer takes care of this. Insurance does not care if the car is imported. Check one of C-MugenR's posts where he links to an importer/exporter list. Its the same list I used, you could also just type importer/exporter in Yahoo Yellow pages and find different brokers in different states. The first step is finding a car and agreeing on a price with an owner, I saw a few Canadian R's for sale on this forum and I think those are a great place to start since its a private sale and those owners will be more willing to work with you since they are on honda-tech. Importing a car takes cooperation on both sides to make it work. In regards to putting you in contact with the dealer who helped me, he is a big new/used car dealer and has 5 or so dealerships. I was going through a broker at first then the dealer agreed to do the entire deal for me and that was more convenient since he buys and sells canadian cars every day. He is a great guy and the most honest car salesman I have ever met. You could call him and try and see if he can keep an eye out for an R at the honda/acura auctions in Canada and let you know if he is able to bring one back. Of course, the car would be delivered to Watertown, NY, about 6 hours from Maryland. But the questions is how often does an ITR find itself in an auction? I waited over a month and nothing turned up in 2 large auctions but I luckily located a private seller trying to get out of his lease from a leasing company in Ottawa, the dealer did all the talking with the leasing company and a few later I had my car. The guy is also very busy so I had to get on his back sometimes. If your real serious I can forward his info, but I dont want people calling him just to be curious. I was die hard about it and had the money in my hand and had already located the car and thats the only reason I asked him for his time.

The differences I have noticed between CDM AND USDM R's are: Daytime Running lights, no Fake CF dash trim, but it is on the gauge cluster, leather shift ****, no standard A/C. Thats about it, oh yah, the CDM ones are CHAMPIONSHIP WHITE!
