Icon6 HowTo: Distributor Seal Replacement, '00 Accord LX

Recently I successfully replaced the internal distributor seal on my wife's 2000 Honda Accord LX, 4-cyl VTec 2.3 liter engine. Her motor is the F23A4. In this post I will show how to replace it.

I am posting this How-To for several reasons: (a) there is virtually no information on the Internet about replacing the seal in the F23A4 distributor, (b) many parts houses including O'Reillys, Autozone, NAPA, RockAuto.com, and Honda dealers do not sell the seal, and if a parts house or Internet parts place sells the seal, their cross-references don't include the F23A4 motor, so they cannot tell you if the distributor seal for Hondas will work on this model distributor. I found one on-line parts place that referenced it, but that was the only one - so I was not sure if it would work. I found out that it will.

The other how-to post (on honda-tech.com) for replacing a distributor seal, is for a different distributor - I believe it is for the F23A5 motor, on a DX Accord. The pictures I post below will make this evident.

I replaced the seal because the distributor was leaking oil, and had oil laying in the distributor cap when I removed it to replace it with a new one (as part of normal maintenance). I also replaced the O-ring, and the heater hose that was compromised from having oil on it.

The part number for the Internal Seal is:
Brand: NOK PN: BH3888-EO

The BH3888-EO number is what the local parts houses used, as well as a couple of Internet Auto Parts websites. Most Internet sites, however, used this part number, which is the same part:
Brand: NOK PN: W0133-1640599

One of the local parts houses, which also sells this seal on the Internet, e-mailed me that there is a high-temperature version, and he recommended this over the standard version. I used the standard version, which ends in the EO suffix. The high temperature version still uses BH3888, but has a different suffix. Here is their webpage for the high temp version, which costs a bit more than the standard version:

I will not be able to finish this post today, but this is a start. Instructions and pictures will follow when I can get to it.

That is the same part number for the F22A1-6 and F22B1/2 distributor inner oil seals as well. There are usually two different types of distributor Hitachi and TEC. One of which has an internal coil, the other does not. The OBD1 dist. have 3 sensors, while OBD2 have just 1. This could be why you see such a difference between yours and the ones in the other write up...... IIRC it is a distributor from an F22 engine.

Look forward to seeing your write up on the F23 dist.
