I'm looking at buying a 2001 CL (not the type S) with 178000 miles. The engine fires right up and seems to idle pretty smoothly. I drove it for about 4 miles on the streets, freeways were packed...and it seemed to shift fine...

The only thing that I could detect was at startup, the engine made a temporary knocking sound for about a half a second. Both times I started the engine, it made that sound.

I wouldn't say the sound was similar to "low oil" causing the knock...it seemed as the noise had a deeper tone to it and I'm guessing it didn't have anything to do with oil because it went away very quickly on both re-starts.

Any opinions, I'm thinking of buying this car...
