So I decided to do the H23 manual tensioner conversion on my f20b. I ran the h22a belt before with the auto tensioner so I bought a new h22a belt thinking it would be fine. It was an extremely tight fit going on with the timing belt adjuster pulley all the way down. Once I finally got the the timing belt on, there just didn't seem to be enough tension on it. It wiggled way too much. I pulled up on the timing belt adjuster pulley as hard as I could but I just can't get any more tension on the belt. Am I not taking the right steps to putting tension on the belt? Has anyone done the h23 conversion to an h22/f20b and been able to get some good tension on the belt?

TLDR; I am having trouble using the H23 manual tensioner. How do you use it?

This is gonna be hard to explain but bare with me. Did you put the washer under the pulley bolt? Also did you install the small pivot point that screws into the oil pump that the tensioner pivots on. Cause it doesn't pivot on the large bolt that gets threaded into the block.

Yeah pretty sure I know what you're talking about, I installed both of those. I was actually able to get a little more tension on it. I borrowed a friends h23 helms manual and found that I was supposed to tighten the adjusting nut, rotate the crank pulley 3 teeth, loosen it (letting the spring put pressure on the belt), then tighten it again. This seemed to help a lot.

Sound about right? Seems like it could use more tension but I guess the spring is rated to a certain value to put the correct amount of pressure on the belt.

 

KS has a pretty cool tesioner, got one for my h22 civic. It's simple and works great.

 

It looks like the KS version is the way to go these days. I will be ordering one very soon.
