1994 Accord EX intermittent starting issues HELP
Maybe your fuel pump isn't priming on the first try. Perhaps try turning the key to the pre-ignition point, then turn it back off without cranking the engine. Do that two times, and then on the third time turn the key all the way and see if it starts. Might not solve the mystery, but it will give you some clues. Ultimately, though, the actual work of checking for spark and fuel is a process under the hood. Doing it first can also save a lot of money. The other poster above who mentioned the ICM pointed to the likely culprit. If it is failing, each time you hit it with juice it wakes up a little bit and is finally able to produce enough spark to get combustion going. Mine once did that in cold weather. It was taking about 8 tries to get it started. I traced the problem to a weak ICM.
If it only does it when it's cold it's probably the coolant temperature sensor or ECT. underneath the distributor. You can test it when the car is warmed up for resistance, should be around 200 to 400 ohms.
