Default Strange ABS issue

I just picked up a nice 2000 PY about three weeks ago, and took it for an autocross "test n tune" event today. I had a strange issue with the ABS. The first time I engaged it, it worked fine. During all subsequent ABS engagements, I could hear and feel the ABS activate, but the pedal would not pulse and braking power actually lessened. It just made a continuous humming sound, not the typical grinding sound when it works properly.

I drove around it the rest of the day by avoiding the lockup threshold. Any thoughts what could be causing this? The car is all stock, including pads, rotors, and calipers. I was running stock wheels with fresh 195-55-15 Star Specs.

Did you check for ABS codes?

I wasn't aware you could check for ABS codes if the light isn't on. Could there still be a fault code if the ABS light is off?
