Default Spray Can Paint + Clear, for a small job, what kind works best?

My crx came with a red hatch, and the car is black.

It is in perfect condition I just want to change the colour to black.

I want to buy simple spray cans for both the paint and clear coat. Is there a best brand I should look for or acrylic/enamel or anything?

Ive spray painted many things, but never automotive panels that will see lots of UV. I dont need technique tips, I just want to know which type of product will give me good results

Cheers

In for answers. I want to paint a front lip, but past work never came out shiny. mainly because i didn't use the right clear paint. more of a glaze.

Cleared with this

Buffed with this

And ended up with this.

If you don't want to use anything catalyzed, I would suggest a good clear 'wheel paint' in rattle can form.

Duplicolor acrylic enamel, those results look great. Heavy coats or thin coats?

I wet sanded the clear with 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper and then used a cheap Harbor Freight random orbital buffer.

I would recommend thin coats to avoid runs

Start with two thin coats and then a wet coat within the first hour. After it dries you can add more coats. Even if you get a run it will go away when you wetsand.

Why is that acrylic enamel clear coat any better than say krylon crystal clear or rustoleum clearcoat

I don't know if it is. It does seem to shine more than the Duplicolor lacquer. Pick one and go for it dude!! Be sure to show us the results.

Default REply: Spray Can Paint + Clear, for a small job, what kind works best?

I bought a rattle can paint "system" from plastikote (primer, frost white and clear coat). I ordered it online and the price/quantity seemed better than duplicolor (bottles were bigger/more paint for less cost). Couldn't find it locally and had to order online. Plastikote Car Color

Do you think you could paint an entire car with the plastikote system?

I'm sure you could paint the whole car with PlastiKote but I don't think it would be much better than any other rattle can job. I call it a system only because I wanted everything to be from the same manufacturer (ie, not mix brands).

...but what about this idea: start out by doing it yourself with the rattle can Primer, rattle can Color, wet sand and smooth ....AND THEN take it to a pro shop to have them professionally paint their clear top coat on. Maybe that would save some cash, because you'd have done most of the work. Who knows, just an idea...

I just like that the clear has a catalyst so I think it would be stronger and last longer

I'll probably end up spraying the car myself with an air gun. I was just hoping to avoid upgrading my TINY compressor just for this job, seems inevitable though
