Default timing belt question

My car has 151k and i was considering doing a timing belt because my car is a 95 and im overdue in milage and years. They say every 100k or 7 years. What bothers me is there is a couple bolts missing off the bottom cover and its cracked open a tiny bit on the one side. .. So im wondering if it was ever done before and the guy didnt put the cover back on right. Why else would it be missing 2 bolts and kinda not on the whole way. Is there anyway to check it. Cause my dealership said they want 550 $ to do a new one. Kinda expensive. Would suck to do it and not need it

I don't know who "they", are that you are referring to, but Honda says to change the timing and balance belt on your car every 5 years or 60,000 miles.

There's no definitive way to know whether ot not its been done if you dont have the previous owners service records.

Better to be safe and do it.
Follow the FAQ and do it yourself if your tight on cash

I thought about it but it seems like a pretty big project and i see alot of people posting alot of problems after doing it their self. The parts alone were 200 and it would easily take an entire weekend for me to do it but for 300 dollars more its warrentied for 2 years and done in half a day at my honda dealership. I think someone did it before cause bolts just dont fall out. But it probably would be a good idea to get it done. I just didnt know if it was able to be checked without having service records

I've noted that a majority of those that have problems are those that do not follow the directions, try and take the easy way out, or skip a step.
It's very easy, and last time I checked the Gates kit was only ~$140 US.

If the lower timing cover is damaged it would be worth it to purchase a new one. That cover prevents any crud and grime from damaging the belt and tensioners.
