My car wont star so i stared by inspecting the fuse box. All i have is a test light i dont have a multimeter. So after realizing that fuse #31 under the dash has no power with the key on i assumed the obvious that it is either the main relay or the ecm. Popped of the bottom cover for the ecu i see a black looking substance around a set of solder points is this a sign of a bad ecm or what couldve caused this. And just yesterday my car went in limp mode and would not rev past 4k. Drove it like that this morning and parked it since then it hasnt started. Any info please?

I think its narrowed down to the ecu. I checked the main relay and it has power and my fuel pump is switching on. I am running a socketed p06 ecu with a obd2-obd1 jumper harness. I am picking up a p2p to test out and see if it works tomorrow as well as a new relay hopefully it does the trick for me i need this to work

 

the backside of that board doesn't look healthy, it may not be fried though. i would swap ecus with somone and see if A. their car starts with your ecu and B. your car starts with their ecu. Odds are is there is somone within range of you who has a honda that will let you try.

 

The guy i am meeting tomorrow with the ecu will let me try it before i trade a set of fat 5's for it.
I am hoping that it solves the problem i havent even had my car for a week yet

That's not a fried ECU (at least not in terms of that black stuff, it may be bad, but that isn't a sign) What you're looking at is a crappy soldering job where someone didn't clean up the resin when they were done soldering the chip socket on the board.

 

What do you think it could be im at my wits end here. I turn the key to start absolutely nothing but the fuel pumps turns on. No starter kick. And it stopped running all of a sudden is this a sign of a bad eld?

 

Wait, starter isn't getting power? Don't even think about the ECU, it doesn't come in to play at all in terms of the starting circuit.

 

I meant the fact that be board appears to have heat warp around the bad soldering is a bad sign. if you look close you can see heat damage.

 

Not really seeing anything besides a really bad soldering job. Again though, if you're not getting power to the starter you have another issue.

 

++1. That's burnt flux from someone using their iron at too high a temp., and not even bothering to clean up after their mess. The solder joints are also **** poor. They should not be distinguishable from those done on a solder bath.

It's really hard to *eff-up through-hole soldering but whoever did this "mod" apparently possessed the negative-skillz required to pull off this masterpiece.

Contemplate this every time you're driving down the highway at 90+ MPH.

 

in the first pic to the right of the big black blob of flux there
is a long pin sticking up
that and the one below it and realy bad joints
i would be suprised if they are not dry or dirty failed joints

find sombody who knows how to solder correctly and get it sorted

dry or dirty joints done by amateurs are the enemy of all us electronic techs

 

re-establish your ground connections to the chassis.
then
...go out and shoot the person that did that solder job on that board.

I agree unfortunately the person before me had this done and i am no solder guy and i don't know anyone i trust to redo that as well. The ecu turned out to be okay. It was a poor connection of the main harness. But sometimes it wont rev past 4k and sometime it does. Plus my speedo stopped working im wondering if this is due to the shitty solder joints form them putting a socket in it?
