Default Need Mechanical Advice

Hi, Everyone, I'm new here.

Several weeks ago I blew a head gasket on my 1987 Honda Accord LX at 227,000 original miles. This car has been well maintained by myself and other previous owners. I am not ready to say goodbye to this car, and so am searching for a way to resurrect the engine.

I have a lot of tools and good mechanical ability. I know I can do the job myself. Here is the question, though. My mechanic said one cylinder tested for very low compression. Can this be fixed by a valve job and new head gasket, or is it likely the whole engine, top and bottom, need to be redone?

If I decide to hire someone to rebuild the entire engine, what is an estimate of my costs? I'm looking for someone who will warranty and stand behind the work.

Last question: I am in Los Angeles. Are there any companies who sell rebuilt engines who do really good work out here?

Thank You!

You'll probably have more success over in the Classic Hondas subforum. There are some guys over there who really know their stuff. Good luck!
