Default 1998 Accord 4 cylinder random stalling, Please help.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and appreciate if someone could help with my 98 accord with random stalling problem. Have been reading through the forum posts but seem like mine is a bit different than the normal one.

When the car suddenly stall (while in drive or park), all the cluster lights turn off. I turn the key to off, take it out, insert it back in, turn it to position 2. Normally at position 2 all the cluster instrument lights will turn on but when the stalling problem happen all the cluster lights stay off. I can continue on to crank the car and the engine will run but stall right away with no light in the cluster.

If I repeat the procedure several time until the cluster lights lid up when the key is position 2, then I can start the car and will run fine until it decided to stall again.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Sam

Have you tested the ign switch?

Thanks for the advice. How do you test the ignition switch? I did re solder all the soldering points at the Main relay and afterward the car runs for 2 days without problem but today it stalled again several times. On a side note, the ABS and brake light have been staying on for 2 months but no burn bulb and brake works just find.

Like the symptoms before, when it stalled none of instrument cluster light turn on (the ABS and brake light also turn off), and I also notice the temperature and fuel gauge also stopped working.

I wonder if the ignition switch or the main relay is the problem will either one cause the instrument cluster light stay off when the engine stalled? Thanks in advance.

Check all your grounds had a similar issue turned out to be ground wire under the iat sensor on right side of intake manifold. May not be solution but would check all grounds

Hi there, all ground check out good, thanks. Call honda and they wanted $105.00 for the ignition switch (non returnable). Just wanted to make sure that mine is actually bad before replacing it.

Anyone can confirm that defective ignition switch can resulted in no cluster instrument light? Thanks in advance.

Ask the dealer to confirm the first one was replaced under the recall by Honda? The second, third are on you....last I saw, aftermarket were around $60.

To confirm, do you have a volt meter? A few tests when it acts up can confirm the switch is bad.

Thanks for the reply. Call the dealer and gave him the vin number and was told that my vin was not included in the recalled. Found the instruction for testing the ign switch and will test it tomorrow.
