The following is as it was related over the radio, and between discussion with NASA officials and is not my personal opinion!
In brief - The race started out beautifuly, with Corey starting, and maintaining the lead. Alex Ratcliffe was slowly reeling him in however, and a heated contest for first place was sure to follow. Unfortunately, at turn 17(believe that's correct), Ratcliffe went deep off the track, ending up almost in the wood line (at least from our vantage position). Almost immediately after that, the call came over the radio, on lap 8, Keith Ruppel, in a borrowed 2000 Acura Integra Type-R complete with a JDM front-end conversion, went 4-off and into the guard rail, crippling the car heavily. The complete front end was reported as totalled. The course went red, and the EV vehicles headed out to check on driver and car. The decision was made to use the last full lap results as the finish, and the racers were called in under a black flag, prematurely terminating the race.
Humor for the night: During the SCCS qualifying, it seemed some cars were triggering the timing and scoring computer twice, sometimes three times when they crossed the start/finish line. The culprit? One of the NASA pit-out crew had two transponders in his pocket, and was walking across the pit-out equivalent of start/finish, which was also set up with a "loop." Needless to say, we all had a big laugh when the humorous incident was discovered!
[i]How cool, Frank DePew just walked in, introduced himself to me and chatted for a couple of minutes. Go Frank!!

yea, it was a rough race. i saw ratcliffe almost nail the tire wall. i have no idea how he saved it, but good job! then, when i heard that there was an accident around turn 7 and the race was over, i decided to leave. well as i was making my way out, here comes the wreckage being towed past me. i turned around to go look at it. it made me wanna cry.
i got some pics that i'll post up later. so, that was a borrowed car? whoever's car it was... i'm sorry about ur car, but thankfully the driver, keith ruppel, was alright. that's all that matters! better luck tomorrow guys!

In this thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=298546&page=1 I said that Corey was going to lap the entire field...I was not joking.
edit - How bad did the car look? Was it the same one with the really ragged JDM front?
PS - huge props to Beefcake (Jason) for finishing ahead of several more experienced drivers in better-prepared cars. "Hype-R", indeed.

yea, it was the yeller itr w/ jdm front that was kinda ragged. when i saw it before the race it had some cracks and mess in the front bumper. the wreck was pretty rough lookin'. it wasn't even my car and it made me sick to my stomach.
oh well, i guess it's time to take the left over parts and make a nasty hatch!
Hunter - who will definitely be getting some sort of race car insurance before he puts his hatch on the track. anybody got some good info on this stuff?

I remember when we saw it for the first time during qualifying. Jack was standing right next to me on the porch at the barn, and the words out of his mouth were, "WTF?"
George, sorry, couldn't find you today to get up my brake bleed till too late. I spoke to you briefly during the meal, and passed you headed towards Danville. We nodded to each other!
Quite an experience to put a face to a name.

Front end wiped completely away, hood bent up like an accordion, both front fenders bent back, cracked windshield, shattered lenses everywhere, core support shaped like a taco, radiator pushed back into the exhaust manifold, broken motor and/or trans mounts, etc. I didn't get a look underneath but presumably the whole load-bearing structure for the front end was bent as well. Sad to see...

It had air bags still working, both of which deployed in the accident. (Air bags should not have been working in a Honda Challenge car!)
It didn't have the correct NASA stickers, numbers or arm restraints.

I'm not trying to attack anyone, just wondering.
