Which will fit better on a teg with 16x8 +38 rims? The rear is the main clearance issue and I really don't want to roll fenders unless I really have to. I prefer to just raise up the height but I can't decide over 215/40 or 205/40. 205/40 is rather thin (prone to bending rim because of aspect ratio) and undersized but 215/40 is a a little better on the sidewall but i think it's barely safe to run it without rubbing.
which one would you go with? 205/40 or 215/40?

There's only a 10mm treadwidth difference and 4mm sidewall height difference. Personally, I see no reason to not go with the 215/40/16, but that's me. The 205/40/16 isn't all that prone to bending a wheel either, just in case you were wondering.

hm, sounds good. have you ever heard of federal SS-595 tires before? I heard they are pretty good for the price but they run wide, so 205/40/16 would be like 215/40/16.

You want a 215/45-16.
Now, if you really want to run undersized tires, I've never had issues with 205/40-16s on Rota Slipstreams on my DC2, even though I've hit potholes hard enough to crack the radiator. Understand that your speedometer and odometer will be off.
205/40 tires are perfectly fine for 16x8 wheels. You can check tirerack to verify this; pick 205/40 tires and then click the 'specs' tab and look for rim width. Please don't label something incorrect simply because it is not in line with what you might want for your car.
The 205/40 will look like rubber bands and I personally wouldn't use them but that doesn't mean they are incorrect; they look like rubber bands on 16x7 also FWIW. 40 series is always recommended for half inch to an inch wider wheel than 45 of the same width is something I've noticed also.

It has everything to do with "what is correct for the car".
Obviously 205/40-16 is fine on a 16x8. It is still the wrong diameter for an Integra, which is what was being discussed.
Any tire size that ends in 16 is the correct diameter tire for that size wheel, as in a 16" wheel. Did you mean sidewall profile instead of diameter?
Since when is tire size dictated by the chassis instead of the size of the rim? Can you show us what tire sizes are the right diameter or whatever for an Integra? What cars are 205/40/16 tires meant for?

And yes, I meant diameter of the tire. That is what is needed to preserve the speedometer and odometer readings.

What size tires should I get?
The proper size depends on your car, not just the wheels you are using. So if you want to ask what size you should get, let us know what kind of car you have (year, model, body style, version)!
For a CRX, del sol, del sol Si, or pre-'96 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
13" - 175/70-13
14" - 185/60-14, 195/55-14
15" - 195/50-15
16" - 205/40-16, 195/45-16
For an Integra, del sol VTEC, or '97-00 Civic, the following sizes are usually best:
14" - 185/65-14, 195/60-14
15" - 195/55/15, 205/50-15
16" - 205/45-16 would be the best size but 215/45-16 will work also but only if your car isnt too low and if the wheel offsets aren't too low.
17" - 205/40/17

195/55-15 (stock size) are 23.4"
205/40-16s are 22.5" and thus, too small
205/45-16s are 23.3"
215/45-16s are 23.6"
205/40-17s are 23.5" just to give another example in a different wheel diameter

I went with 205/40/16, and yes they are undersized and will throw off the speedometer + odometer but the current tire size right now already does that (i didn't even know back then) so i'm sure it wouldn't make much of a difference to me. they are 195/60/15. 215/40/16 would be my second choice but they are rare and more expensive.
215/45/16 is the O.E size on JDM ITR but the tire size are rare over here and also expensive.
205/45/16 is perfect for 16x7-16x7.5 rims in terms of speedometer/odometer and sidewall for ride comfort/rim protection.
I've done enough research in the past two months about these sizes and hope this helps out for anyone that come across the same problem as me and will be using this thread in the future.

'..usually..' =/= correct or incorrect. It's a general guideline more than anything else.
