What do you mean lag? Does it not start the instant you turn the key, but have a lag, then it seem like the engine registered that you turn the key then just turn over and start? Mine have a small lag like this, and I havent figured it out, but it havent left me stranded yet. Mine mainly does this in the winter time, and only in the mornings. It has a 1/2 second-1 second lag, almost like it doesnt realize that I turned the key. I dont know if it could be the kill switch in my alarm (prestige alarm) or some other reason.

Or does the engine continually crank for a little while before it 'catches' and get started?

So it makes a repeated clicking sound for 4-5 seconds and then turns on? Possibly try a completely different battery if you have access to one, or go get a voltage meter from walmart. (can come in handy in alot of cases other then this) Bateries won't stay good forever, and if it's an old battery even if you charge it it won't function right. other then that check all your grounds. That's the very first thing a shop will do after checking the voltage on the battery.
