'99 Accord LX 5-Spd, what can I do to make it sportier?
I have a '99 Honda Accord LX 5-spd with ~ 45,000 miles. The 4 cyl. engine, of course (they didn't make 6 cyl. engines w/manual transmission in '99).
I have always heard of people doing all sorts of technical modifications to Civics and Accords, then I saw this site in that Mustang Cobra thread (where the ex-Ford technician drover her car @ 140mph...).
I like the anonymous look of an Accord, especially my beige one ("heather mist"), but am interested in doing something to its performance or in the interior. Any ideas on what I can do to it to make it a little more sporty (though with manual transmission it is suprisingly quick car), things that don't cost a whole lot and hopefully doesn't affect my gas milage?
Thanks!
And a little trivia... in '99 (and possibly now) Alpine made the radios. It is a low end Alpine, but it is nice for a factory radio. I hooked up an Alpine CD changer to it, works great, though an adapter is needed. Plus the Alpine CD changer was a heck of a lot less than a "Honda" CD changer. My pet peeve with the Alpine CD changer, besides the price, was that to get the cord which connects the radio to the changer (in the trunk), you had to buy the install kit @ ~ $60. $60 for a bar and a few bolts. Source: Alpine's web site.

have you already bought the bar and bolts? if not, go to circut city, most likely they will have what you need, that is if they have a road shop. they might charge you 15-30 dollars. i work at best buy and we have lots of spare parts for everything.

Thanks for the ideas.
What are the bar and bolts, I've not heard of those befoer.
Where can I learn more about changing my intake and header? My exhaust is a feasible change, but that would wait for a couple of years (until my current system rusts out).
The new springs and shocks is a definate possibility at this time. About how much would Prokit springs and koni yellow shocks run, just for the parts (no labor)?
As for the audio, I have no Fry's around here, but I would do it myself anyway. The '99 had a single DIN radio, so it can easily be swapped out with pretty much any aftermarket radio, wtih no kits needed. I've already installed an Alpine CD changer into the trunk in the space where the dealer would install a CD changer (in the trunk). If I were to buy a new radio today, I'd pick up whatever the mid-level ($300ish) Alpine CD player is, with MP3 capability, I'd hook my existing CD changer into it, and also replace the speakers.

koni yellows: $555 + shipping from tornactive.com you wont find them much cheaper, and if you do, buy them.
Eibach prokit: about $150 + shipping. look around. Shox.com ususally has good prices. also check ebay. they show up there pretty frequently.
Don't wait for your current exhaust to rust. you will find yourself quite frustrated at the pace it rusts. mine is a early model year 99 with 92k on it. they salt the roads in winter where i live and the car never sits in a garage. there is very little surface rust on any part of the exhaust, and no real cancer growing on it. I originally had that idea as well.

definately drop and suspension for handling... struts and sways anything that ends in 'bar' stiffen up your ride... you pop on some light weight rims and you'll be chirping (which gives the illusion that your goin fast)... shortshifter adapter and/or cut your shifter.. that biatch is was to high to feel 'sporty'. pop on the suspension mods and masic performance: ihe and at least you'll feel and sound 'sporty'...
I agree, drop it, I like H&R springs and koni yellows, tighten it up with S/T sway bars, let it breath better, best bet is AEM CAI and Greddy EVO, lightweight rims and good rubber, your set to sport,,,
