Here is how to get it off easily.
Jack up car, remove lugs, takeoff the hub cap (or center cap if you have alloys)
Put the wheel back on
Lower the car
Put your torque wrench or breakerbar on the axle nut and remove it
then jack the car back up and remove wheel to continue dissassembly

Indeed, axle nuts are not tough to remove.

Be sure to properly torque the axle nuts after you replace the bearings or you will be replaceing them again soon...(I think they are around 128 ft lbs....if I remember correctly)

The main point is to not majorly over-torque them...it will mess up your brand new bearings...

Make sure you replace them with the new bearings!

They aren't that hard to remove.

I had to use a propane torch on my axle nut to break it free.

I've never had a problem breaking axle nuts loose, when using a 2 foot breaker bar. Even if someone just steps on the brakes while you bust it loose it's not impossible to do. Make sure to unotch it and get a 32mm axle nut socket not just any old 32mm socket.

Coming from the aviation industry, I will tell you to torque it back to spec. If I am not mistaken it should be around 204 ft-lbs or 2448 in-lbs. You can rent a torque wrench from Autozone or AdvanceAuto. They will more than likely be +/- 4 degrees. However, it is always a good idea to torque anything down to factory specs for safety purposes.

In order to get your correct torque value, check a manual or you may be able to get the info from a Honda dealer.

You are way off, it's around 130lbs.

That sounds more like it.

You really don't need to torque them though, they're a double ball bearing, it's basically impossible to over tighten them, once the two inner races bottom out against each other that's it.

I dont care what anyone says, in the rust belt axle bolts original to a 20 yr old car do not come off easily-
I tried everything, took it to a reg shop, they couldnt---took it to a diesel mechanic, he used a 1" named "big bertha" That was rated up to 1300lb of tq in reverse....didnt move it.

oxy torch got it off though in 10 seconds.

why is it hard to get off? a 3ft breaker bar and a screwdriver can do the job. stick the screwdriver in the vent slots in the rotor and pin it against the caliper and break it loose. make sure to unbend the tab on the edge of the nut before u do so or else it will be impossible to get off. Correct it is a 32mm

Sometimes they come off nice, sometimes they don't. The last one I had to deal with had to come off with a 3/4 drive impact. Tried a 1/2 drive electric impact, nope. 1/2 drive breaker bar, nope, broke the bar, didn't even have a pipe on it. 1/2 drive Mac or older IR air impact gun. Nope. Tried the oxy acetylene torch on it and tried again, nope. 1/2 snap-on bar, nope. 3/4 drive air impact finally spun it off after all that.

I think had I been home and had my 1/2 IR Ti2135 TiMAX it probably would have come off though.

Not to mention people have weird torque down numbers, look at this thread....one person suggested 200+ lbs. If it was put on that tight, 15+ years of driving just about welded that on.

Get a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster, WD40 is good for door hinges and stuff but not this, and soak the nut after unstaking it. If you can't get it, you can sometimes split nuts with a chisel or cutoff wheel and they'll come off easier. You would just have to be very careful to not hit anything else. And it will likely ruin the axle...

I have an 8 foot long lead pipe, and a 3/4" breaker bar. I have yet to meet an axle nut on any Honda, Subaru, or Ford that I couldn't get off.
