Rebuild questions: When to replace valve springs?
I'm starting another build. A boosted H22A1. 10:1 Mahle pistons, sleeved, Eagle rods, Supertech valves and guides, OEM cams. I'm not planning to up the rev limiter. Currently there's something like 160k miles on the motor.
On one hand, I'm replacing everything else. On the other, I'm keeping OEM H22A1 cams and not increasing the rev limiter. Stiffer springs shouldn't be needed, they will just create more parasitic loss and wear valvetrain faster. However, OEM valvesprings are expensive. I can get Supertech springs for just over $8 a valve. As I said though, planning to keep oem cams since apparently they're best with low boost and not revving higher, so shouldn't need them necessarily.

I personally ruined the set of springs in my car after a downshift from 5th to second on the interstate, (kinda missed 4th gear) but after that my stock springs got to where they would begin to float the valves at around 6k or so, so I replaced them with some BC springs and put my car back together, after about 20k miles or so I could see significant wear on my rocker arms compared to what it was before, I since then put some stage two cams and have a spare head to trade the arms with but the damage is done. This is my testimony to the significant wear with the combination of aftermarket springs and stock cams, I am not sure what kind of advice to give on spring choice but I and others have had wear issues with that setup. Good luck with the build.
Why don't you have the spring rates checked and if they are within spec then just re-use the springs you have now since you will be running a stock cam?
Kinda what I was thinking too, if the valves open and shut fine now I wouldn't see a problem with re-using the other ones, a machine shop would be able to test the springs though
