89 honda civic dx troubleshooting
Alright, so I picked up a 1989 Honda Civic DX for 500 bucks. I've replaced the clutch because the idiots that owned it before my somehow managed to put it in backwards -_-
I've changed the oil, oil filter, and the antifreeze.
But I've noticed that fuel is getting away from the throttle body and into the valve cover and is mixing with oil. Not to mention my air filter was soaked. I've ordered new injectors for it already. But is this the problem? The car only starts when I take off the cover for the throttle body, so it isn't getting any air unless I do that. It starts right up when it is off.
Also, I am getting a Code 4 and a Code 8 on the ECU. Not to mention the previous owners made this a change over from an automatic to a 5 speed. I just replaced the automatic ECU with a ECU from a 5 speed CRX.
It seems to have brand new engine, but again, the previous owners didn't really ground everything correctly. And by correctly I mean they didn't tighten anything. Seems like they were just starting to put a LOT of money into this thing (hence the changeover, new engine, etc.)
It idles fine when I have that cover off, but immediately dies when I put it on.
Please and thanks for helping me trouble shoot this car. I really need to get it running. Money isn't really an object.

sounds to me like you have headache. you can either do 3 things.
1. buy a good manual and go through your engine to make everything right.
2. buy a new motor.
3.sell the car.
it's up to you. are you wanting the b2 for the mpg's?

im assuming its a dual point if ur taking a cover off the throttle body. if you have to take it off to get air i would suggest checking the ability of the idle air control valve, and disconnecting your vacuume lines from the top end such as the one to your dashpot and IACV
Alright, UPDATE: So I got the car running again, but now it is "hunting" for idle. I tried to relocate the car to my mothers house (like 4 miles from where I live) but I got a mile into the drive and now the car won't start. It has fuel, and it will start for about 10 seconds and then die again. Everything is hooked up correctly and the engine itself turns over. The fuel pump works and the injectors are new. (by the way, the other problem of fuel getting into the valve cover is fixed) I think the TPS (throttle position sensor a.k.a. throttle angle sensor) is bad. Some forums say it can also be the IAT (intake air temperature sensor) that has gone bad. Any feedback will help. I needed this car to run 3 weeks ago :[
