Default thoughts on how to lengthen my shift linkage

Hey H-T!
First of all Im sick & tired of driving on top of the pedals/sterring wheel while I'm running thru the gears! Being 6' it lessens the driving enjoyment! .
So I gots this crazy idea to lengthen my shift linkage, so that the shifter sits 6-8" further back. I imagine the location of the shifter to be simular to a RX7 or 240SX
The tunnel would obviously be the easiest to adjust, the linkage however I'm not so sure about
So let me know what you guys think! thx!

I am 6'6" and have no problems. You obviously sit awkward while driving.

...Hmm possibly. However I like to have my feet close to the pedals, and enoy the comfort of my DeSol seats (ya kno with my head resting on the head rest)
whatever, whatever Im not happy where things sit, the radio is too far away and I feel slightly akward drivin around

So if you could Please Humor me with ideas to properly lengthen the shift linkage that would be great!

I too am 6*2 and have no problems in my rex lol

You could do something similiar to my shortened linkage and weld a steel block, dowel etc.. spliced into the linkage to lengthen. Not the best option for sure but definately will work.

Question?

If your going to move the shifter 6-8inches back what do you plan on doing with the e brake?

With some threaded rod and nuts welded at either end of the shifter rod you should be able to put that stick wherever you want without relocating it...

I have a car that Im working on now that someone "relocated" the shifter on and they hacked the shifter hole.. Now Ive gotta figure out how Im gonna plug that 3"x 3" gash hacked into the front stock shifter hole..

Two identical length solid rod 6~8" long the same diameter of the shift rods.
Four couplers - 2" X 1/8~1/4" wall hollow rod with an inner diameter to slip fit over the solid rod/shift rod.
Cut shift rods, install couplers and extension rods, weld, done.

Just like this, but in metal rather than PVC

And how about the shifter hole vato!? Gotta move that back... I once had a shifter on an old toyota pickup. It had a swept back design on the shifter itself. Maybe you can get one of those tall style shifters?

That's a great idea, just have a custom shifter made that bends all the way back to the ebrake

Aluminum or SS plate + screws, lockwashers, nuts + silicone = is easy fix to the existing hole. Made a few plates like this back in the day to cover the cable hole for auto-to manual swaps using OEM cable shield gasket instead of silicone. Anyway... it works and looks good.

Cut new hole for new shifter location. If you feel fancy, cut out existing hole and relocate weld it into the new location.

I would never do it unless racecar.
Center console would not approve of my skill-less-ness plastic welding and I need center console.

Awesome!! Thx for all the ideas guys!!
I may try the DA shift linkage first, & if that still doesnt get put me where I want to be, then I will do the solid rod & coupler.
As for the E-brake I thought about shorting the handle or possible making a "L" shape to clear the shifter

Why don't you try different seats first? I am just above 6'5 and I put DA seats in my hatch, it made a world of difference. Much more leg room, head room and my arm lays comfortable on my DC armest.

well I got a wicked good deal at the yard 50$ for DeSol seats...and very comfortable & yes I considered the DA seats, they just wernt to my liking.
honestly havent sat in the car for a little while & had a moment to reflect earlier today
so I figured a movement of 6" back would help immensely & considering a pistol grip E-brake

Also...how do I go about bringing out the steering wheel? A new column, perhaps tilt, or maybe an aftermarket wheel & spacer?

Sound like your it for quite a bit of work. I would just get a shifter made with the required bents to suit your size?
