'83 Honda Nighthawk 550. Clutch slipping when hot, have done lots of trouble shooting
Good afternoon to you all and thank you in advance for your help!
I have a problem that is just boggling my mind. At the moment my Nighthawk is my only form of transportation so the sooner I can get this fixed the better. Here's the problem:
My bike is slipping when it gets into higher RPM and starts slipping more and more as the bike heats up until it won't move at all. I've pulled the friction plates and put a caliper on each one. they are all in spec (3.25mm) and the pad material looks good. The steels don't appear to be warped in anyway. The springs are also in spec (36mm). The clutch is engaging the push rod and does engage/disengage the pressure plate properly. To my knowledge there had never been any oil in the bike that could have some sort of special additive. I have tried 3 different oil weights to see if it makes any difference and it doesn't. I'm completely lost.
When the bike is hot, and I pull the clutch cover to expose the clutch pack I can put the bike in gear and turn the rear wheel freely and watch the basket just spin. Once the bike is cooler, and I pull the plates and steels, clean everything, and put it back together I can no longer manually spin the back wheel while it's in gear, but everything starts all over again when I attempt to drive it. It slips in higher RPM and then proceeds to slip more and more when the bike heats up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i know it sounds obvious but have you checked the cable adjustment? other than that all i could guess is the plates may be glazed, or unnaturally worn some other way. they are a wear item, and it may be worth it to just replace them.
I've adjusted the cable, to no avail. I think I'm going to try to sand the plates to remove any glaze that might be on them and see if that helps. I would love to get a replacement clutch pack but all of them I've found would take a week to get here and I need it now.
