Default symptoms of a bad catalytic converter

i'm going under the chassis this weekend, doing a few checks and PM's and would like to know, what should i be looking/ smelling at as far as having a bad cat. it reaks fuel or sulfur in the mornings. rattles louder than rattlesnakes. i just need a few more info on what i should be expecting. will it throw me any codes if i don't replace within a month?(i've had this for approx. 5 months). i'm taking any suggestions. throw 'em... also suggestions for a temprorary replacements. i'm all about CA legalities, so i'm just buying a new b-piping(w/cat) and es muffler. thanx techies

From what you're describing, your ceramic honeycomb is melted.

He's talking about the actual catalyst inside your cat, which filters out the carbon, noX and all emissions. Its more than likely broken apart from the cat which is causing the rattling. Is this a hi-flow cat?

i see. if it is the catalyst itself, then wouldn't i need to repalce the whole b-piping? the cat is welded on to the b-piping. bad catalyst. thanx 96jdmcoupe.

You shouldn't have to replace the whole b piping. Just take it down to a muffler shop and get another cat welded on. If you could, I would have it flanged so you could bolt up a stock/aftermarket cat or test pipe if needed, rather than having to get something cut and welded each time.

LOL, hey 96jdmcoupe look at the post. how many guys do you know named "Dawn"?

in reference to the the post all you need to do is replace the cat. thatseesm to happen to Stock cats after a few years. mine used to rattle like that once i took it off you can look inside and see there was a big hole where some of the honeycomb was broken.

rattling indicates internal separation of the honeycomb (the stuff) from the canister (the body) of the convertor. Es muy malo!

My symptom was a lost of ~10-15hp....

When trying to get triple digit speed(km/h...) the car became lamently slow.
Hitting 4 speed and full gaz,I had to wait ~30-40 sec. befor 8k!

Also, the floor become warm after a ride.(Even when not tiiite riding...)

So,I disamble the cat.....and found out that I couldn't see the sun(by looking inside the cat)

Just for a test,I took my screw driver and a hammer and hop!Gone honeycomb....
I took some honeycomb and they were 90% clugged!

After,I found out that my B16 Rex never had that performance since the swap,1 year before....

All I can see is,after 10 years,I think the cat become useless.

Take temps infront of and behind the cat when the car is running..
hook up osciliscope to 1st and 2nd 02 sensors.. when running.. they should be alternating from about .4 to .8 volts..
if there is no ocsillation.. this is a problem

but if the cat is rattling.. there is probably some damage to the cat

Hahahah! I love French Canadians! Je t'aime! heheh... so funny...

If you're running an OBDII ECU, you'll likely throw a code 67 like I am--bad catalytic converter. I'd imagine an OBDI ECU would also trigger some sort of MIL/CEL code.
