Please help if you can......

Bought a Honda Civic 92 for my son,great car(first car)runs great-looks great except the speedometer spins in opposite direction,I hear so many comments about it being the VSS(by the way how do I test the vss)but I also hear the same people say it reverts back to original problem,is it the cable(plug)is it the sensor it's expensive $90 bucks-----also people say to take out the speedo-for what? if it's electronic nothing to fix there just swap-out.
