Default My 97 Integra GS: Luxury Sports Coupe

I'm a member on clubintegra and a Legend forum and I've already posted my car there, but always held off on HT since it seems daunting to make a thread or car stand out among the many ricers, noobs, and veterans.

Anyways, I've owned quite a few Hondas, and this is my third Integra.

I've always started out with the info:
1997 Integra GS
117K
B18B1, Automatic (haters, just... don't.)
Cypress Green Pearl

Anyways, I decided what I would try to set me apart is to up the luxury factor of the Integra. 90% of the owners seem to focus on speed and weight reduction, basically turning these cars into very fast Civics.

I'm glad the Integra is a luxury car and I plan to highlight that with my mods.

----The following is a copy/paste of posts from my thread on clubintegra chronicling my progress up to today.------

When I got the car it was completely stock except for a K&N intake filter the PO added. Makes a nice throaty sound.

It was filthy when I got it so I immediately set out to clean it. Turns out the interior and exterior are pretty darn nice!

The bumpers were cracked and scratched though so I went to look for replacements. I found a 94-97 bumper in better condition last week, but I'm hoping to score a CGP 98 bumper. Just yesterday I bought a 98 rear bumper with a lip and put in on this morning.

As for other mods, here's a list:

Replaced stock deck with a vintage Pioneer double DIN HU. It's a beast and retailed for ~$1200 in 1994.

Added an equally vintage Sony 45w x2 amp and sub. 90's car audio FTW!

Added white LED strips for the footwells. Looks classy, not rice.

Found the faux-woodgrain shifter bezel in the junkyard and added that.

Also found a new-looking set of OEM floormats. These will be for show only. They're too nice for DD.

Added a leather shifter I took from a G1 CL.

Added signal/wiper stalk covers from a Legend.

Found a sunroof visor off a G2 DA.

Pics! These predate some of the mods listed here, particularly the bumpers.

That's all for now. I'm hoping to add more things.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I read the thread on TI about the 8G Si exhaust being bolt on to my car, so I immediately went on CL and found one for 50 and had it installed. It sounds nice, not raspy or ricey, and fits perfectly.

The tip was being blocked by the skirt on the bumper so I decided to remove it, turns out it was a Wings West skirt. Anyway it was starting to come loose.

I may be looking at a 98 bumper and/or OEM visors locally soon!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yesterday I bought a set of OEM visors for $70 and just finished installing them.

It was a pain to do, and much more difficult than replacing a bumper.

I'm happy with the result though!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night I made my high beams into yellow fogs, not by using fake films, but with yellow capsules I pulled from a Lexus. The color is wonderful and rich. I butchered part of the rear of my headlight a bit though in my rush

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've decided to, when I save enough, get the ITR front end.

That and I'm looking for all the Honda badges to replace at once, including the wheel caps. By the way, the EK coupe rear emblem is a perfect fit for the DC, pegs and all.

Anyways, I'm still progressing with my car.

I'm not aiming to build some speed machine, but rather to add luxury items to it. The Integra was supposed to be a sport luxury compact and it seems like most people forget that and focus on stripping the car in the name of weight.

That said, today I bought some felt door trim from a Legend and replaced the black vynil trim. Adds for a nice luxo touch and actually helps reduce the wind noise!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some pictures of my interior mods.

Rubber covers for the turn signal/wiper stalks:

Faux wood console, leather shift **** and my HU:

Felt weatherstripping:

Something a little fancier would be to add heated seats so my switch can actually work... not impossible but would require removing the seat covers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've found a JDM CD/TV/Navi HU and system on eBay for my car... I'm really close to dropping the $$ on it :O

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just bought the Gathers navi unit on eBay. It's the VX-398 and VS-298 combo with a Navi control box. I'm excited!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I pieced together a decent set of gold badges for the rear and stuck them on to see how they'd look. I'm keeping them at least for now, the gold on green really looks nice.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I fixed the missing images by switching photobucket accounts :p

So I bought a 98+ bumper a few weeks ago, and it happened to be in Clover Green, so it was mismatched in color, plus it had a crack/scuffs.

I decided a bra would cover it nicely if I could find one, and yesterday I finally did, for $60. Fits pretty well, and nicely covers up the imperfections. I do need a set of new headlights though, which should be coming soon.

Also, I added leather grab handles from a Legend, and also installed one over the driver's side to use those blocked off holes.

Like I said, my direction with this car is more luxury oriented than race.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I bought the JDM Gathers TV/CD/Navi system I was eyeing for a while. It *should* come tomorrow and I'm excited! It consists of the Gathers VX-398 HU, VS-298 TV/Monitor, and the GN-308Vi Voice Navigation unit.

eBay pics:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So it arrived yesterday!

The HU and TV are hooked up and working. However the TV and radio are unusable because of our frequency differences, but the CD player work and I've been using the video in as an AUX port for my iPod. The HU is by Pioneer and the TV is by Clarion.

The Navi part of the system didn't come with a harness so it is not hooked up, and I need to research more to get it connected. It is made by Pioneer and uses the standard pioneer harness, but I assume the pinouts are different.

The sound is great, just like an aftermarket Pioneer HU, but I do want to use my sub with it like my previous setup which would require a LOC.

But does anybody know how the OEM Gathers sub is connected to these units? Does it splice into it or use some seperate harness? The navi box has a port that says "sub-out" but I'm not sure if it means subwoofer.

Anyways, pics!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks

Since I badged the car a Honda it was kinda rice to have the Acura airbag since most people never swap that, so I got a black steering wheel and airbag from a Civic and bolted it on. The design is identical to the Integra one and it was easier to swap than I expected. It needs some cleaning though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The steering wheel mod was done today, I am still hoping to progress.

Thanks for staying with me and looking at my thread.

Thank you!

For the yellow capsules, I enlarged the high beam holes enough to fit the housing in it, and used one of the three screw holes there to secure it. It's not that easy to describe with words.

I did want amber signals, the clears just came because I really needed a quick fix and they were cheap.

Looks good, def a different approach to a Honda. What did that heated switch come out of? I think I found something I would like to add to my eg build.

Thanks! I was thinking... my friend said "Hondas are played out..." and I told him that it would only be played out if you keep doing the same thing, which I'm not trying to do.

The heated switches are from the G1 Acura CL. There are two, the one pictured is the 2 in 1 switch only available on 1997 3.0CL AFAIK. I also have a set of two individual switches from a 2.2 or 2.3 CL that are more common and fit the same space.

I hear ya. I went with the same ole thing. I bought a eg6 to turn into a track car since I sold my crotch rocket and traded my "fun car" g35 in for a suv so i needed something that would hold me over for a few years and could get me over triple digits. A gtr is still a few years down the road. I just swapped a GSR in her and going boost in a few months.

I was going to gut my hatch but have grown fond of driving it. It is like a go cart

Well, I sold the car about 4 days ago.

Anyways, I really do consider the Integra a luxurious car, at least in terms of build quality compared to contemporary Hondas. I tested a EK Civic and the difference was night and day. The "fog" lights were not really aimed either. Just yellow highs that were kind of dimmed.

Anyways, I had fun with that car and I hope to inspire other Integra owners with what I did to this car and to remind them that they don't have to forgo comfort with these cars.
