cylinder wall rust
My motor has been apart for 2 months now and there is a slight rust line in 2 of my cylinder can I just just use wd40 on a rag and wipe it off or would it be ok to just put the head back on and will the rust go away after a couple mins of the motor being run. There is not alot of rust and the whole cylinder wall is not rusty just a line going down 2 of the walls. Also when installig arp head studs should I use thread sealer on the threads that go into the block?
dont worry about it you will be fine i promise.
it will be gone in about 30 seconds
yes as long as the thread lock is specified for that i never use any when building doesnt matter imo

I would wipe it off. if its caked up at all you could damage a ring. Not worth the risk if you ask me. also ARP's usually come with a molly lube. You should use that on the threads when you put them in the block. Hand tighten the stud and then use correct sequence on the nuts, and you should be good to go.
impossible to say on the rust. if it wipes off with oil and you can't feel any spots, gouging, you're fine. if it's set in you may be considering a cleaning pass with a ball hone and oil.
lol you will be fine ive ran plenty of block around the shop that have been sitting for years. im not going to tear apart a good cross hatch becuase there is rust.
the rings might get damaged are you serious ? i guess at 9,000 rpms and all that oil and combustion presure might damage them. but no they hold just fine for years.

as long as the rust hasn't developed a ridge that you can feel with your nail, you'll be fine. wipe it down. if you can still feel it, use a scotch bright pad and some oil to clean it up.
the only time you need to use sealer on head bolts or studs is when they protrude into a water jacket

whenever I had some cylinder wall rust, I used a hone to give a quick cleaning. Use some wd-40 after you clean the walls and you shouldn't have the rust issue anymore. As for the arp studs, I just put some oil on the rods, hand tighten, and torque to specs. Good luck.

Arp recommends not using oil but using their supplied molly lube. do not really know why, something to do with the bolt stretch. and yes if the rust had left a ridge without being honed or wiped out the rings, pistons, and cylinder walls all have a chance of being damaged. if its just some rust residue then its probebly fine, but i would still clean it up. not worth the chance....
ok im going to spray some wd40 on a rag and whipe them clean and as for the arp headstuds the instructions that they sent me says to use thread sealer on the block side bolts not the moly lube. Also when I went to install the head studs to the block some of the thread holes on the block where filled with oil should I just use a air chuck to spray out most of the oil then some carb cleaner to make sure its dry?
Well i have heard that a lot of people use just motor oil on the studs. but i called arp and they told me to use the lube they provided and not oil. in theory you would want to get the oil out for the sealer to work correctly. You might just want to call ARP just to make sure. They are really helpful
