Default Tranny cant make up its mind!

Hey all,

So heres the issue ive got. My tranny while driving around the city cannot make up its mind when in 3rd gear to either shift into 4th or to do the neutral thing (OD? I dont know what it is called), so instead it kind of just locks up in 3rd and slows the car down, doesnt cruise (all of this when releasing the gas). Im wondering what could be the issue - ?? Any ideas. When im in D3 ive got no problem it just goes into neutral.OD when i release the gas.

Here is a better picture

D4
City Driving - 20 - 40 mph
1st - 2nd - 3rd ---????? 4th or OD no wait just 3rd - slowed

D3
City Driving - 20 - 40 mph
1st - 2nd - 3rd - OD/Neutral no problem

Thanks guys and gals

Shinghi

The FSM shows these 3→4 shift points:
  • TPS 0.8v (closed throttle): 29 - 33 mph
  • TPS 2.25v: 54 - 59 mph
  • TPS 4.5 (full throttle) 93 - 98 mph
If you're going 35mph, not touching the gas, the transmission stays in 3rd gear and won't shift into 4th (OD)?

Thanks roader, so i should release the gas between 29-33 and i should be fine right.

or do you think it is better to just be in D3 when cruising around town? will that sacrifice gas mileage?

So I pinpointed when the "catch" occurs and it is while in 3rd between 25-28.9 mph.

The same catch does not happen when in d3.

Any ideas? VSS? Linkage cable? Some sensor?

With city driving there will be more changes in speed and less likely an ability to maintain a high steady state speed, with it in D4 it will try to upshift when you are cruising, this is most likely the hunting you are feeling. Leave it in D3 and the transmission will not try to constantly upshift.

If I can maintain a steady state speed of 35+MPH I put the trans in D4. If I know I'll be doing more throttle modulation/braking stuck in traffic, I leave it in D3.
