cutting a spare key?
i have a 2006 odyssey. i purchased a spare key online but i need it cut. i didn't know that the key itself needed programming too. how much should i be paying for cutting and programming? AAA said $45 but didn't mention programming. the dealer said $150. where should i go?
You need to go to a locksmith or the dealer. As far as I know, those are your only options.
I used to be parts manager at the local Honda dealer and we were actually cheaper than any of our local locksmiths, but that may not be the case in your city.
So do some calling around and see who gives you the better deal.
At our dealer, the key was cut in the parts department and programmed by the service department. The actual cutting of the key can just be done using the vin#, but the key and car both have to be present for the programming.
Our keys were about $70(including being cut), then another $40 for programming.
Back before I was manager, if someone came in with a key they purchased online, they still got charged $70 for being cut and then $40 for the program.
But once I took over, I would cut the key for free(only took 2-3 mins of my time) and then send them to the service department for programming. So it only cost them $40.
It may be worth going into your local dealer and chatting up one of the parts guys to see who actually cuts the keys.
You'd be surprised what a smile and a box of donuts can get you.
