Like it says, I cleaned the EGR ports and the passages. I got the gasket for the valve but haven't gotten around to taking the valve off yet. 7 days later I get a CEL. It only comes on when the car isn't 100% warmed up (the needle looks to be all the way up but it just got there) and I'm accelerating up a hill. WTF? I cleaned the damn thing. I didn't get this light before. Can anyone make any sense of this at all?
Thanks
Thanks
The ports and the "lift" are two different things. You can have clogged ports and no CEL, in fact that is the norm. The reverse is true as well.
So, clean the valve. Reset ECU. If the code comes back then more testing will be needed.....

Thanks for the tip. But, how do I clean the valve? All of the guides only go into cleaning the ports.
Basically just clean it out with carb cleaner....open it with either vac or by hand so you can get the "cone" and seat clean.
Warning, one of the nuts that hold the egr down is at an odd angle, be sure to use the proper tool so you don't round the nut.....something like a 6 point swivel socket or a crows foot line wrench.

Basically the valve has a cup like top thus it covers the bolts on the bottom. If you use 1/4" long extension or wobble kind, you can reach over it. http://www.harborfreight.com/9-piece...ons-67971.html
Since the valve is on there for a long time, penetrating oil might help taking the bolts off. The hardest part is getting the bolts off. Use a magnetized tip to hold on the bolts on its last turn, or the bolts can fall down into the engine bay. Once the valve is off, turn it upside down, spray the bottom with brake cleaner or carb cleaner. Let it soak for a little bit. Push the little rod on the bottom to open the valve up. While it's soaking, go to the car, spray some cleaner down the 2 holes and if you have a flexible small brush, push it down while turning the brush to clean out the runner below. You can see where the runner lead to from looking at it. Make sure you reset the computer so it can relearn the clearer air inlet.
Very easy job but could be time consuming as the bolts can be hard to take off. Make sure you use a good short quality socket other wise you could split open the socket and not know it.
