Default 96 Type R Rotors and Calipers...

I have a '99 GSR and a brake job is due very soon. When I purchased the car I was told the front was equipped with '96 R rotors and calipers. I checked this out and found that the rotors were drilled to fit the 4x100 bolt pattern. The stopping power is great and I love the fact that I have a larger rotor, pad and caliper up front.

My question is... What pads do I track down for replacement?

It's a daily driven car and I like using factory pads; having no problems with them in the past. Also, a Honda-saavy parts guy at an Acura dealership mentioned that AP1 S2000 pads would work.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

96 R calipers use GSR brake pads.. you can also just use GSR rotors as a replacement

If he uses gsr rotors He would probably have to use different caliper brackets? Or is the diameter the same?

1996 ITR brakes are like a mix between 4cyl accord. I don't believe that the diamter of the rotor is any bigger than the GSR. The pad surface itself might be a tiny bit bigger, but I'm not sure.

The 97+ ITR brakes are the ones you want.

he would have to use gsr brackets as I think they are different.

If your have a GSR with rotor drilled to 4x100, were they 4x114.3 to begin with? If so, that's actually a rare/weird situation without much to gain.

96 spec-r brakes were the same size as the GSR (USDM) in 4x114.3. The thought was that a lighter car would not need more braking.

The pads are the same size as the GSR (100% confirmed on that). If they're 4x100, I'd use GSR pads, GSR rotors in 4x100 (assuming you have 4x100 based on your post), and leave it that. If something rubs, then swap the caliper bracket to a GSR bracket. I never compared the 96 spec-R bracket to a GSR bracket.

If you have 4x114.3 as a bolt pattern, then I can point you in a better direction as well.

if you have the big 4 suspension buy prelude vtec rotors which are a direct fit, they get 23T calipers from a 2000 accord v6, usdm itr and others, mill an eighth off the bracket and they bolt right up.

cheap and easy big brakes

Agreed. Or use the above with a 25T bracket, and no milling of bracket required (which is what I did). Either way is an improvement, cheap to do, and readily available. This is assuming you have 4x114.3 and not 4x100.

Alright, tons of info here and I'm glad everyone knows their stuff!

Just to reiterate, I'm not looking to modify my braking system. I'm just trying to find replacement parts for my current setup. When I bought the car I was told it was equipped with 96 R brakes up front. Owning Integras for the past decade or so, I could visually see that the front brakes were larger.

The owner before did not perform any of his own work and was probably mis-informed from the get-go.

The rotors are 4x114 drilled to fit my GSR 4x100 stock hubs. The caliper and bracket show no signs of modification at all. Looks like a straight bolt up.

I just need help identifying what I actually have. It sounds like
there can be any number of combinations stemming from various Honda vehicles.

So, it sounds like I would have to post some pics to help you guys help me! Are there any identifying #'s, markings, etc for any of the above info everyone has posted in this topic? Once again, thank you guys for your time and I'm interested to find out what I got!

hang on. 4x114 rotors slide right on a 96 itr spindle. if you still have gsr spindles and 4x100, a redrilled 4x114 that's larger is probably a prelude vtec rotor. look at your caliper and see if you see 23t stamped on the bracket anywhere. starting to sound like you have the itr big brake upgrade on a stock gsr front end

Racebum,

I pulled my wheel off and I will list all the markings I see stamped or casted into my caliper...

Inner side of the caliper (towards engine bay): "090 690" is casted into the caliper where the brake line bolts up.

Top of caliper: "L" for left (drivers side) and below the L is :17CL15VN

Bottom of caliper: Nissin AT 53.

Those are all the marking on the caliper that I can see so far...

I'm agreeing with racebum on this. That caliper stamp points to a 98-spec JDM ITR, USDM ITR, Prelude VTEC, etc. etc.

It sounds like you have 4x114 Prelude VTEC 4G rotors redrilled to 4x100.

You can order a set of 93-96 Prelude VTEC front rotors and have them redrilled as well. Or, you can contact fastbrakes.com and order a set of specR rotors for a 4x100 GSR. I assume fastbrakes is still around. I purchased from Brian years ago, and he was great.
