Odd whine noise - where to start
At idle I'm hearing a whining noise. It's odd because it doesn't change with engine speed when I rev the engine. It changes tone when I turn on the turn signal.
The radio and a/c are off. Come to think of it, not sure if the cabin fan (blower) was off.
It doesn't make any sense to me. It sounds like something electrical because it changes with the turn signal. How do I start troubleshooting this noise?
I have over 248k miles on the chassis, and rebuilt engine @ 180k. Pullies, alternator, compressor are all original except for the idler pulley. Engine is NA. Other mods to factor in: Comptech Icebox, Mugen 4-2-1 usdm header.

wow 248k on a R please post pics hahahhahahaa....
check your grounds, also try to listen closely to where the sounds come and tells us from what area you hear it the most.
also I had a civic before that the actualy switch from the turn signal was making the whine noise and the wipers wouldnt work at times... check into that

Here are a couple pics! Cluster and car.
MiraiZ, I think your guess is right. When I was hearing the whining noise, the gas tank was near empty. I filled up the tank and I'm not hearing the whine anymore.
I don't usually run the tank near empty, so this is the first time I heard the noise. I am running a Walbro pump. (Leftover part when I used to run boosted.)

I bet it's coming from your speakers, based on it changing tones when you turn on accessories. Have you changed speakers or decks or amplifiers recently?
Turn OFF the stereo and check if the whine is still there.
EDIT: Just noticed you said the stereo was off!

Ok.. It's confirmed. It is the fuel pump. When you are sitting in the car, it sounds like the sound is coming from the front, but if you step outside the car and put your ear near the fuel tank, you can hear the whine from the fuel pump.
Is this something to be worried about? I recently started driving my H22A ef on a daily bases and sometimes the whine noise is very loud.
I can't stop thinking about the fuel tank exploding right behind my back.
