Default Oil smell

Whats up HT had a general question...I have a 97 civic cx with the stock motor (single cam non-vtec)and it is consuming some oil on top of the the oil smell. Basically it's smells like oil, i dont have any visible smoke from what i can tell, but i do have a black sooty residue all over my bumper and muffler. Long story short do you guys think its the seals or the rings? thanks for the help.

Well correct me if im wrong but if it was rings there would be smoke I believe, look on your block with a good flashlight (dont trust sunlight) any oil marks? Any more info would be great but just see if theres oil anywhere first

soot could also be from running too rich of a air/fuel mixture

Thanks guys...i was able to take a good look at the block and its all nice and dry, i did the cap rotor plugs and wires about 500 miles suspecting there was a miss. Something i did notice was my temp gauge stays on cold even after my 30 minute drive to work. And the heat isnt all that good even as i pull up to work. I'm gonna check the coolant out to see if its low or if the system just has to be burped and see how the car runs. Thanks again

Check to see if you have a thermostat.
