D16Y7 transmission - rattling (Is is common?)
Hello guys,
The car has almost 150K miles, I bought it from an middle age lady. No have idea why she drove stick. I changed the tranny oil after I bought it so about 25K miles ago. The guy said he alawasy put Honda MTF from the dealer.
I have few things that I think are not normal:
- when on neutral standing still I can hear the gears grinding,
and I think it wasn't that few month ago.
- my clutch is slipping badly that sometimes I have problems with starting.
- my stick is moving when accelerating or decelerating.
I thought that change of the tranny fluid would help, but I read here and on d-series forum that my main shaft bearing might be gone.
Is there any common problem with D16Y7 tranny when it gets alot of miles or it is just a manner of proper shifting gears? (I am so gentle on up and down shifting, always with double clutching)
My question is should I just change the oil to see of there any improvement or I should rebuild the tranny?
Should I rebuilt the tranny or get Y8 tranny?

Does the transmission noise quiet when the clutch pedal is depressed?
Sounds like it's time to drop the transmission, to replace the clutch and flywheel, and to crack the transmission open and replace the input shaft bearing.

Do what Ron said, also replace the pressure plate and pilot bearing while there, and replace shifter bushings. If the shifter is moving that much I would also check motor mounts.
Moving shifter under load is a sign of bad shift linkage bushing or really bad motor mounts as stated. The grinding sound that you here when in neutral is sometimes cause by a vibrating throw-out bearing as I have discoverd so when you change the clutch as it sounds like it is time check the condition of the throw out bearing. I would also take into consideration of opening up the tranny and checking everything as stated above.

Isn't it easier to get a whole new tranny and even Y8 tranny and just install it?
Also is there a big chance to mess up something if I decided to do it on my own and can I do it for a day?

Cracking the transmission open and replacing a main bearing is a bit more challenging, but again doable if you have a garage and the service manual for your car.
And don't forget that H-T is a great resource when specific questions arise.
Probably the input shaft bearing. It's not hard to change. I changed one on a car a few months ago and I had zero experience taking apart a transmission. The bearing was only $12 at a local bearing shop and I saw it as low as $5 dollars online. Obviously it won't be the same one but it shouldn't be that expensive.

If you're going to do the transmission overhaul yourself, GET A SERVICE MANUAL. Period. No exceptions. Get the service manual, and check all of your clearances VERY carefully. Make sure you know where everything is at all times, and make sure you know exactly how everything goes inside the transmission.

Guys its not hard to admit that transmission rebuild on my own with just a friend for help will be a BIG challenge, and I don't have another car to use if I'm not able to finish it for a day.
So I'm gonna use the help of professional mechanic.
How much do you think is the reasonable cost without part, considering the hours of labor.
Also is the Y8 transmission bolt on on Y7 engine (because I found some on craigslist for about $200 and I'm tempted of the shorter 2nd and 3rd gears)?
Also any recommendations on a clutch or that one from the dealer is good enough?

Dealership clutch is fine, if you're staying stock or running basic bolt-ons. To have your transmission actually rebuilt by a shop, assuming they're doing the pulling and replacing, absolute minimum $800. In my area, I got quotes for anywhere from $1500 to $3000.
An EX tranny will bolt right up to your DX motor, and will be a MUCH cheaper option.

May I use B7 tranny or any other tranny from the e 5th generation on my Y7?
I guess the ISB is a common problem for Y7 and Y8 trannies..., so I want to stay away.
Just want to ask is changing the ISB on my tranny considered rebuilt or there are other parts that need to be changed too along with the ISB?

Having any gear shifting issues? If not, drop the transmission and then verify that the ISB is indeed the culprit. Then crack the transmission open, replace it, and also clean the magnet.

The input shaft bearing is basically the last thing you can take out of a transmission. If you're replacing it, you might as well go ahead and replace all of the bearings and seals. Synchrotech has a great bearing, seal, and synchro set for a good price.
