Default Black substance under radiator cap

96 Civic EX

Is it possible to have a black substance in the cooling system and not be oil?

Right under the cap there is a black real dark, darker than oil black under the cap?

I used a white papertowel to skim the top of the radiator opening, and then ran it no more black????

I checked the oil cap seems ok, car does not run hot. I know I am buring oil though.

I never added anything to the cooling system except coolant. I did have the thermostat done recently.

Water pump done about 5 months ago.

I wiped it down with a white paper towel, dark black and a little greasy, not brown like oil would be.

The dealer did it, so I am not sure, or maybe when they did the water pump?

If it's NOT in the coolant then you're making big deal about nothing. If it returns then you need to start worrying.

Strange, because I am worrying could be oil, but I wiped the underside of the cap, then there was a little floating by the radiator opening, used a paper towel grabbed it, then let the car run, did not see anymore, no bubbling just flowing coolant. I will have to look another day.
