1998 honda accord is making me fed up! please read
First and foremost I want to say hello and thank you to everyone who replies to my thread!
My parents acquired a 1998 honda accord dx model about 5 years ago and this car has been great until about a year ago when the transmission goes bad so the first thing we did was go to jdm engine depot to get a low mileage transmission, after a week that transmission takes a dump on my family. They would not refund us our 550 paid, so thumbs down to jdm engine depot in Kearny, NJ. My dad then decided to take it to a local mechanic in town. He gives us a 50k mile transmission and after 6 months it begins to jerk/slip. Check engine light comes on and it comes up for clutch solenoid and torque converter, now I go to a transmission shop and they go transmission is no good. Im really fed up with this car this will be 3rd transmission in about a year. I want to know for those with a 1998 honda accord how did you go about this situation? Where did you get a transmission? I was thinking of going with Synchrotech transmission once i have all the money saved but I really dont know im fed up
Also this car has 68,xxx miles on it so i dont want to sell, its been well taken care of.
Another issue.
Last week the car just turned off on me for no apparent reason and did it again this week what can it be? I found out the honda accords from year 98-02 has an ignition switch recall, apparently mine was done already so i was on my own to get this fixed. Thank you Honda-Tech for your wonderful write-ups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saved me about 150 dollars

is it a v6? if it is those cars have tranny problems. i work at a mechanic shop and we do transmissions as well. we once in a while get those cars for tranny rebuilds and they never return for any other tranny problem. only tunes ups etc. but yes those trannies are known to go out. and for the codes you got for the tranny clutch solenoid. just take them off and clean them. its a couple of 10mm socket and a good extension. if you see them a lil dirty do not i repeat do not change the fluid it will just further damage the tranny trust me on that!
Sorry to hear about your problems, like JDMcertified909 said, the v6 accord's are riddled with tranny issues. I had one myself in 2008 and I was forced to get rid of it due to similar issues.
I have family members/friends with these gen Accords and they are riddled with tranny problems. It's really unfortunate but seeing as how you've had so many problems it may be best to just get rid of the car and get something else. Short of getting a whole rebuild which would run you thousands of dollars, buying used trans will probably lead you down the same road you've been down. Just get something without known trans problems. There is no cheap way out of your issue.
ur not alone man. i own a 2002 4 cyln, after 80k miles it went to hell, i got 150k miles on it now, how? i unplugged the front tranny solinoid and it the car drive in safe mode, it takes off slower but gain normal driving after 20-40 mph, just dont make u turns when cars coming fast, u wont make it, a fuc k these years accords and odessey tranny. just unplug the front sensors on ur tranny and it will drive

no problem. i just take them out and get a 12 volt battery and plug them so that they open and blast them with carb cleaner. but take of the screen before spraying card cleaner at them as the gasket will shrink and get hard making it useless for sealing. also if you plan on getting rebuild THE RIGHT WAY with torque wrenches and everything plan on shoving out about 2 to 3 grand. transmission is all about torque specs. one wrong spec and that tranny wont last. and also if your gonna get it rebuild we our shop recommend changing the tranny oil about every year since they have tranny problems and guess what. they never come back so it works
My 99 has issues to and i hear eventually they all will, even the 4 bangers, the only suggestion i have is 5 speed swap if you dont want to get rid of it like me im in the process of getting all the parts and studying the wiring

i was kind of opting for the synchrotech transmission its about 1300 a local shop told me 350 for install. Im thinking about adding some lucas in there . The ignition switch went on me today so frustrating but went to honda paid 79 for it and looked on h-t how to write ups and i found it, thanks to the guy who posted that thread saved me 200 dollars
eh idk about a 5 speed swap, im working on my ek right now, accord is just a daily driver
Word, i like 5 speed as my daily driver that was the main reason im doing the swap, even if my tranny was good.....but having 2 projects is tough ive been neglecting my Contour SVT. And i also want to do a 1990 EF civic 4 door b20z swap in the near future
I recently put a 2001 jdm h23a1 bluetop with auto trans into 1998 accord dx. engine with tranny delivered was like 1500 usd. delivered from montreal to seattle. I think it is a great swap once you are comfortable with the wiring scheme. I used the 1998 dx harness which had to be modified considerably. also the jdm engine "complete with un-cut wiring harness" harness was totally cut off leaving me holding the bag and holding my breath. you never know what they did with what wire, and you really need the original. had it not been cut I could have split it open and routed it directly to where it needs to be. it came with ecu also. pretty much drop in other than that. and it is totally radical to drive if you want to buy a trans every year. if you beat on your car, even occasionally, convert to stick. well worth the time and money if your car is clean enough to keep.
i like 5 speed as well but this car was given to me because i just did not like my accord so my dad gave the car to my sister and i toook the accord. yeah im going to do a fully built b20vtec in my ek, already got the parts for the swap and just got omniman's video, what he teaches in that video was well worth the 35 dollars i paid

to do the 5 speed conversion is pretty simple but if i do im going with a full H swap, going to convert the dashboard harness and get a new engine harness from the junkyard so everything would be plug and play for me. Take a look at LKQ, or car-part.com
You should stop buying used parts expecting them to be perfect, Pay a rebuilder to redo the transmission 1300 and then you also get a warrenty with it 99% of the time...

Our warranty was 30 days, ouch. And I have bought a used Trans jdm from a different dealer, and it was spent. They want lke 350 just to ship it back, nonrefundable. It is risky and you neverknow whatyou will get. If you choose to stay auto, the mcja Trans hooked to that bluetop h23 is a match made for lots of fun. Way better than standard accord feel. The little bastage goes like the devil. I am super surprised and quite satisfied.
speaking of doing the 5 speed swap in the 6th gen. I am wanting to do the same thing to my 99 LX . Auto to 5 speed swap. I am having trouble finding info on this if anyone could help me out.
