b16 turbo smoking?... comments/ thoughts
my buddies b16a turbo started smoking out the breather on the valve cover... checked pcv valve and everything dealing w that and they were all fine... what could be problem?? piston rings? valve seals? heres some pics to go off of
i agree with what you said. either the bottom end or it could be the seals/guides.
he doesnt have a catch can too so his pcv is seeing positive pressure. if it sees positive pressure the oil system is all messed up. could of caused motor to wear prematurely. starving the head and bottom end of oil.
i thought in the begining it could be the ebay turbo with its weak seals and the high oil pressure pushing its way through the seals. but the turbo wasnt the problem

Edit just seen that pic..why is your return line like that?

car had a tree fall on it.. yes tuned w neptune and the oil line is just zip tied there for now so it dont leak oil on my floor lol... it smoked a little out of the valve cover breather but pcv were fine and so was everything else.. maybe oil catch can?... havnt done the leakdown test yet
Dude really, that is exhaust carbon from an exhaust leak at the manifold in the pics. Anywhere you have an exhaust leak it will leave black crap. I see no pics with smoke coming from the valve cover. A little smoke from the valve cover is normal but a lot is a crank case vent problem. B series PCV systems are way too small even for the stock motor. Looks like your bubby has more problem with that car than it smoking.
1st things 1st. DO A LEAKDOWN TEST. no other advise will be better to give you until thats done.
Smoke from the valve cover at idle/or gas smell within the smoke= cracked ringlands/finished piston rings.
Smoke from the valve cover only during high revs = normal blowby unless its a cloud of smoke...then thats a different set of problems
Since you make no mention of the motor being built ill take a stab in the dark that that motor is bone stock. Not having a catch can setup on any turbo car in my book is NOT a good idea its actually a good way to help the motor last especially when running factory internals you need all the release of pressure you can get. Unless you plan on taking the motor apart to rebuild anyway do a leakdown test.

thank u m3tech95 from what u r saying it would seem to be cracked ringlands or finished piston rings... and yes the motor is bone stock... we just want to fix the smoking before dropping it into a del sol
doing leakdown this week... and what do u mean whats w the oil return line?.. it has restrictor needle in it and is fine... might just be zip tied somewhere in the pic so no oil leaks out
Yeah. Why? It's supposed to be as short as possible.
Not on the return line it shouldn't. Now I know you guys have no clue what you're doing.

Im almost certain he still has oil in the pan and that line is there just to keep oil from dripping everywhere....i did the same thing when my block was 1st put on the engine stand didnt have time to be meticulous that day when i removed it....the line i used was from the valve cover/catch can setup which would explain why it was so long..I highly doubt its like that when sitting in the engine bay...
