rev's too high for freeway driving? [JDM tranny]
i think this has been discussed before but i couldnt find what i wanted this time in the search. i have an S1 tranny and as we all know, its not really meant for freeway driving. i go to school 100 miles (1.5 hours) away. i'm wondering how hard it is on my car to stay at 4-4.5k rpms for that distance. i change my oil every 3k miles etc, and my car runs extremely cool now that i removed the AC condensor. i'm not expecting replies with exact numbers, but what do you guys think of this? am i really shortening the life of my motor? i always hear people say honda motors live to be revved, and i redline often, but i wasnt sure about all of this long-duration revving.
thankyou,
kevin

Hmm my prelude rides the highway between 4000-4500 all the time...that's the stock tranny so
What's your rev limit?

i think it should be fine. I have a spoon tranny with the 4.7 FD and drive on the freeway everyday to school which is 45 minutes away. My rpm's are at 45-4700 going 80 but i try to go 70 most of the time. I've been driving like this for about a year and my engine still feels strong. I also go back and forth from LA to San Francisco alot.
I've had my JDM teg for nearly two years and travel approx 50miles a day to and from work and in 5th its at 4000-4500rpm most of the time (4000rpm=80mph approx) I wouldnt worry about it, considering that 4000rpm is only half of what the engine will rev to in most honda engines
i have a h22 with a accord tranny and my rpm are too low and i wish i had that problem. My car drops to around 4900 rpm in the 1-2 shift. and thats shifting the latest i can. definately sucks ***. btw my civic with a b16 never had a problem in the 2 years i owned it and i did alot of 4500-5000 high speed driving.
ok thats really good to know bc the last thing i want to do shorten the life due to freeway driving. thanks!

You'll be fine, just keep the oil change at 2500-3000 miles.
Now you could swap in a LS 5th, but for the time and trouble, it will be easier just to change the oil.
GAS mileage, whats that?

Keep in mind a tire with a shorter overall dia. will increase rpm at any given speed when compared to a taller tire.
yeah but i'm not interested in changing the tire size since that would throw off my spedometer, odometer, and not to mention my ratios. thanks for the replies people, it gives me a piece of mind. and a comeback when my car complains to me
I change my oil in tranny every 30k miles. If you're running it @ higher RPM you will wear the motor a little faster. BUT, most of the wear comes from irregular oil changes, cold starts & running it while cold.

like stated before, my 97SH lude rides @ 4000rpm @80mph. I drive to school as well, bout 60 miles away. should be fine. I figure it as my motor and tranny are doing 50% of the work they are capable of, cuz fuel cutoff is @8k (with incorect tach, and # stated above are on the same tach) should be fine..
for the tranny fluid, might wanna use GM syncromesh or redline MTR, instead of the Honda factory crap..

I know its been said, im just adding to the agreement..
You'll be fine. 4000-5000rpm on the highway for long periods is not bad. OIL
For tranny fluid: Honda MTF only.
Highway vs. City (big difference).
Its a short geared tranny, so if you do a lot of city driving, change the tranny fluid every other engine oil change.
If you just drive on the highway, you barely have to change it.
