Video Camera Mounts - Suggestions?
I see that IOPort is selling two variations now.

Their original, with an attempt at vibration control
$99.95

This one without vibration control
$99.95
I've also found this one, sold by Rivergate.

$79
I'm liking the rivergate one right now. Any opinions?

Spend the $20 on the vibration control. It works.

That was shot with a vibration control mount. The camera is a Sony with "Steadi-Shot".

Here's the IO Port mount in my car. It works best if you keep the "arms" as compact as possible. Otherwise if you stretch them out, you really have to make sure the strap is really tight. I didn't use the strap here and the video is shakey.

I have used the IO Port mount in the past, but have recently purchased the Rivergate model. I like the river gate model better. I think it vibrates less than the IO port and it will last forever. It has limited adjustment, but will not come loose like the IO port.
I have found that some one the electronic stabilization works adversly if used incar. It over compensates, but then again my video camera is pretty old.
If anything the Rivergate mount just looks cool.

How about those of us who are not equipped with roll-cages?
Sidenote for those with truck: You can make your own cacorder mount to fit between the two bedrails on your truck for less than $100 easily... I should put up some pictures of the one i designed out of poplar wood and aluminum - Works great, even with a little camera vibration.
Whenever I get a new laptop then I would be able to get some of my autocross runs online....
I have the IOPort with the vibration control and it works very nicely. If you use the supplied safety strap (required by the SCCA and some HPDE's), you can reduce almost all vibration. Also keep the adjustable arms as close to center as possible.
how hard is it to build your own (i.e. mount a piece of wood or plastic from the driver's passenger seat [around the headrest piece] and fasten the camera on it)...though vibration may be a problem...i think i'll try that this november at summit
I actually have used this Hamma mount and it is pretty good. You just have to make sure that you apply the suction correctly or it will fly off as it did to me.

I have had good luck with the original I/O Port mount on the cage. I haven't tried anything else, but with the same camera I'm told the video looks much better out of my car vs. a home made mount.

Cost:
$15 for mini tripod from target
$10 for metal
$4 for black spray paint
And a couple hours labor...

Vibrates a little but not too bad
