Can someone confirm? Y8 head, y7 distributor, p28 ecu.
Can I use the y7 ecu (obd1) on the y8 head with the p28 ecu and still match the vtec ecu? I guess my question here is does it matter what distributor I use on the vtec head. Do I need a distributor from a "vtec" head/motor? Or is the y7 distributor the right one for this. On an A6 block by the way.
D16Y8/D16Y7 distributors are the same.
Non-D16Z6/D15Z1 OBD1 distributors are the same.
D16Z6 distributor hits 180 degrees off or some silly thing, I forget. Easy to get around by flipping plug wires 180, I did this when I was given a D15B7 dizzy that had D16Z6 internals because someone dropped a D15B notec in an EJ1 and I guess they thought they had to do that.
That pretty much sums up any dizzy questions. You can use an OBD2 dizzy on OBD1 if you swap plugs or use a conversion pigtail from the dizzy to the harness. OBD1/OBD2 sensors are the same.
You can't use an OBD0 dizzy with anything other than OBD0.
If you meant "y7 distributor", not "y7 ecu (obd1)", then yes you can use it. But it is an OBD2 dizzy and you'll have to swap plugs/use a conversion pigtail. It will work with a P28.

Here's a link to the internal difference.
The correct fix/mod takes a tiny bit of effort, but it can be done.
Just flipping some wires isn't gonna do it.

i second this. a y7 is the same too.
don't use a different dizzy for this. the d15 one will always throw a code and never run right even if you swap those 2 wires. i know from experience, not from reading. obd1 d15 is baaaaad for y8. sure, it bolts up... but its wrong.
