Default Trans done?

Well last night while turning into my neighborhood, as I shifted into 2nd, it just revved out without engaging. I pulled over and tried taking off in 1st and heard this God awful "clanking" coming from the passenger side. This proceeded to happen while trying every gear.

It almost sounded as if the axle came out and was just slamming around. So I get out and look for anything out of the ordinary and everything seemed fine. I can actually feel the car going into gear every time, but when I start to release the clutch...all hell breaks loose.

Anyone run into this before? I won't have time to dig into it for at least a week so I'm trying to get an idea of what might have happened.

Very hard to tell from the poor quality video but it's probably either a broken axle or differential - if your story is exactly how it happened I would lean towards the latter.

Meh, cant expect high quality from a 2 year old Droid lol.

But yea, that's pretty much an exact play by play...sans the 1/2 mile push home. Thank God for having a light weight car.

Guess I'll start looking for a transmission now then, that one had 253k on it.

Check the axles first before you run out and buy another transmission. If the axles are fine and the transmission was shifting great before, why not just fix whatever is broken inside the unit?

I replaced the driver axle last month, and the pass side looks less than a year old. I still may fix whatever I see wrong, but i was still tossing around the idea of a si trans lately so this just gives me an excuse

No transmission upgrades for me.

I went home between jobs and tore into it a bit. The axle was spinning in the hub, and the nut was loose. Im guessing the nut backed out and all hell broke loose from there. More details later this week when I have time to work on it.

Bright side....you found your problem.....I hope it didn't strip the teeth on the axle or hub man.

True......there's a reason why they cut a slot out on the end of the axle. Unfortunately you went through the reason why....

Better than having an internal trans problem though!

Luckily for my pride, that's not the side I installed. I'm gonna check the hub whenever I have time. Fingers crossed.

I have a feeling the previous owner put it in. He admitted to not knowing much about cars but him and his friends would fix things. Needless to say, I've found some funny ****...this not being one of them.

So much for this being a cheap beater. I've put more new parts in this thing, just to "do things right", than my subaru has got in almost a year

Sounds like some ghetto redneck rigging like a lot of people like to do around my way......I hate that ****. If you're gonna do something do it the right way. Atleast that's my personal preferance.

Decided to tighten up the axle to see if it would drive last night. Needless to say, she went together fine, I dented the hell out of the nut, and the bitch still backed off within about two seconds of driving. I'm going to Florida for a week tomorrow so I have to keep daily driving my subaru until i have time to fix this thing -__-

Sounds like the axle or hub splines are stripped then. You are going to have to seperate it to find out what happened. This should have been done in the first place though...

Oh I fully planned on taking it all apart and finding the cause in the first place. Part of me just wanted to see if the nut just wasnt staked like it should have been originally. I'm 100% prepared for stripped splines on either since that's what I first thought as soon as i spun the shaft by hand while still in the hub.

Oh holy hell.

Finally got time to take it apart yesterday. Pulled the axle out and noticed the axle splines were a little flat.

After getting to the parts store I counted the axle shaft splines and got 23, picked the new one up and headed home. I decided to count the spindle splines and couldn't believe what I found.

Axle-23
Spindle-26

Whoever put this axle in last didnt even bother to try. How I drove this thing for a month after I bought it blows my mind. I had to order the correct axle and I should have it today. We'll see what else I find -_-
