Icon2 Rims and suspension aren't getting along

Hey everyone I'm new to the forum, but Ive owned Honda's since i was 18, the other day i bought some 16X7J rims with ET40..i have the rear ones mount since they had tires on them, waiting till i get 2 more tires so i can mount the front...my issue is when I'm driving alone everything is fine, no grinds except when i hit say a pot hole, then only my passenger side rim grinds on inside..today i gave my dad a ride and when i turn left the rear passenger side rim grinds if i take the turn to fast (more than 10mph) i weigh approx. 145..my dad approx. 225...Ive already tried to see what the issue is and i cant figure it out..i slightly ground down the upper control arm thinking it was grinding (when i say grind i just mean off the edges) and it still grinds only with my dad riding with me..i haven't driven with my whole family yet, I'm worries it will grind worse with my wife and 2 kids (more weight) does anyone have any ideas what i can do to stop the grinding without getting rid of the rims? the tires i I'm running are 215/50/R16 but its not the tires that grind its the rim...i was thinking maybe getting a lower tie brace, but not sure if it will help...i'll try to post pix tonight if i can..also i replaced the passenger control arm the day i put the rim on since i had a broken bolt where the strut was bolted..also is it bad to run 14" rims and tires up front and 16" rims and tires in back for a long time?

get someone to bounce the car up and down and see if the tires/rims scrub the inner wheel well.

are you certain you're not rubbing with that tire size? that's a pretty big tire you're running on the car.

can you physically see on the rim where it is grinding? (ie: on the lip, on the barrel, etc?).

LOL funny you say that..its exactly what i told him, on the way to work though i was alone and i took a sharp turn and it grinded..so i guess his weight is outta the question.

I'd say the wheels are too damned wide!
I ran a 16x7 wheel for a while and they just BARELY cleared the suspension and that was with a slightly more negative offset than factory
Get a narrower wheel or one with a more negative offset or something to clear it.
Also consider replacing your 10+ year old shocks while you're at it (throw some stiffer springs on if ya want but DO NOT lower it with that size of tire or you'll rub your wheel well!)
^^;

well the rear drivers/passenger side doesn't grind when i turn right, or drive straight, but when i turn left is when the passenger rear rim grinds..or if i hit a bump to hard..only the passenger side grinds not the driver side..i know 16x7 is wide but i read on other forums it should be ok with 40 offset..i painted areas i think it might be hitting in black..so after a few days of driving and turning left i will see where it grinded off the paint and that will help me more, i think it might be grinding on the trailing arm, but i'll see in a few days.

Oops, I edited my post
My rims were also 16x7 and they had also had a +40 offset but as said they cleared (barely)
Weird...
Although I DO have stiff-assed Eibach Sportline Springs and was running a lower profile tire (40) resulting in less bounce in the ride, so maybe that makes a difference?
^^;

Maybe check your alignment and see if you can have your suspension clearance adjusted?
I honestly have no idea beyond that (unless the wheels really aren't +40 and are like +41 or 42 or something and got mislabeled)
:/

But whatever it is, it seems like things are just BARELY outta wack

i measured the offset myself and i got 40, plus it was stamped ET40 on inside of the rim, i asked my mechanic buddy who does wheel alignments if maybe my rear right was out of alignment and he said probably not but he would need to put it on the alignment machine to be sure, also i read that honda's are safe with +38 - +48 offset just not sure if its true, i bought the rims with 40 offset thinking i would be safe, i mean they were only $150 for all four rims with one rim missing a tire. with my 14" rims in the rear i didn't have uneven wear so maybe alignment is ok..idk i guess i'll bite the bullet and have him check alignment..i like working on my own cars but i guess alignment is one thing ive never done. otherwise i can try to trade the rims for 15's

well here's what happened before i put the rims on..the bolt that was connected to the shock fork and lower control arm was broken from the day i bought the car, and i drove it like that since june of last yr till 3 days ago, and when i pulled the control arm off i tried to get the broken bolt off but it was like rusted on and wouldn't budge so i bought a new lower control arm and put it on and yea..maybe that screwed up the alignment on the rear right.

Texas4door, yea i was thinking maybe better suspension too, and i'm not into lowering my cars lol i don't like to drive and feel like my cars on a pogo stick, any recommendations on suspension? and i'm thinking lower tie brace bar, and maybe front H bar and upper brace bar to stiffen up suspension more.

It was free! (the coffee)
XD

And if you can get the alignment done at a discount, have at it!
(if you're buds with the mechanic, he might even do it for free)

i don't see how 16x7 and +40 will hit. that is a common offset and size to run (i have done so in the past). do you have a bad wheel bearing? hell, 15x7 will put you closer to the uperr control arm and even then it still shouldn't hit.

You can always flare the fenders out a little bit to get the necessary wheel clearance. That's what I had to do when I tried out my buddies 17 inch rims.

and you can run the setup you have now, but that looks horrible and ghetto. at least have your wheels match.

FWIW, I put Black Racing N1 15" wheels with 205/50r15's on my car when I did the suspension and disc swap on my car a year ago and had the same problem. As soon as I replaced the upper camber arms with Buddy Clubs, the rubbing went away.

So i i had my buddy look at the my set up and i was right, rim grinds on bottom of trailing arm also rear passenger side struts are not shot but on the verge hence why it rubs he said, i'm waiting to do full alignment once i get the front tires mounted on rims and on car
and you can run the setup you have now, but that looks horrible and ghetto. at least have your wheels match.
i have all 4 rims..just front rims don't have tires on em yet, looking for some 205/50/16 or 205/45/16 then all rims will match..anyways my buddy recommended i do this:

1.Get narrower rims like width between 6-6.5.
2.get spacers, but then wheels will stick out and grind on fenders unless i roll them, unless i get small spacers.
3.upgrade rear struts and springs..but i might not like the stiffer set up.
4.get thinner trailing arms? is that even possible?
5.for laugh's he said i can grind some metal off where i think its hitting like i did on the upper control arm..as he laughed at what i did...

so i guess once i get front rims mounted i'll start working on the issue till then, back to 14 inch steelies..

Update...I've installed a lower tie brace bar, going to order wheel spacers, just not sure if I should get 3mm or 5mm spacers, I don't really wanna extend my studs, any ideas of what would work best? Also I'm thinking of getting new struts for rear but keep stock springs, any ideas on good struts? Or should I get struts ands springs?
