Default Ferrea valve springs with Skunk2 Pro 1 cams

I have a big valve DART head with Ferrea valves F5503 and F5501. Id like to run the Skunk2 Pro1 cams but Id like to keep the springs and retainers Ferrea. I need help choosing the right Ferrea valve spring for the Pro 1 cam.

The Skunk2 Pro valve springs are rated at:
Seat Pressure: 60 lbs at 1.320”
Open Pressure: 210 lbs at 0.820”
Coil Bind: 0.720”

Ferrea doesn't have a spring that matches those specs. Which spring do you recommend? Or should I keep it simple and run the Skunk2 Pro valve springs and retainers?

I agree with the logic but what about matching springs/retainers with the valves?
Are the skunk2 springs designed for added pressures of boost on the valve?

Like I said in the other thread you need farrea keepers with their valves, but that's making me think you would need thier retainers for the keepers, and their springs for the retainers... I dunno. I'm sure Mac can shed some light on that.

Hey Brian I have the Ferrea valve train (springs, retainers, keepers, etc) and Skunk 2 Pro 1 cams.

I had a valve tip break off because the machine shop didn't use ferrea keepers when they re-installed the valve train for me (after a piston ring job). So yes YOU MUST use all ferrea components. I spent hours on the phone with Ferrea (great customer service btw) and sent them back my entire valve train.

That being said, my valve train with those cams has been fine for 4-5 years now and makes insane power for pump gas. I made 575 whp on just 93 octane and then now I have 600 whp with the AEM methanol spray to keep her cool on the circuit track.

I will have to look into what I have, but if you call Ferrea they can tell you what you'll need. I've never had a problem. I believe I'm running the competition plus stock size valves and some type of beehive valve spring.

Thanks Scott, So at the very least if I run Ferrea valves you MUST use Ferrea keepers. Do you need to use their retainer as well? This is why Id like to keep it all one brand.

I heard the beehive springs bind with the larger cams.

ive also just bought the pro 1's and was thinking about which springs/retainer combo to use. I was planning on skunk2 springs retainers pro-series to match the cams. But lately ive been thinking about super-tech mostly b/c of the $$ that will be saved also i see tons of people using them. So i was wondering pretty much the same question as the thread starter except with supertech verses skunk2.

Will i be fine with supertech saving the extra $$? Or should i stick with the Skunk2?

I have heard not too many good things about the bee-hives. I would go dual springs.

I have Ferrea valves with their keepers on supertech springs/retainers. I am pretty sure just using their keepers and other peoples retainers is ok.. i have been revving to 9500 the past year no problems...

As far as the Beehive springs binding, i guess you have to see what the Seat pressure and Coil bind is on them. Then you should be able to figure out if they are ok with the Pro 1's

I have been running the Manley tool steel keepers with Ferrea 6000 series valves with titanium retainers for about 6,000 miles. No issues at all. I have had a factory keeper fail and drop a valve with a titanium retainer. The taper of the keeper must match the taper of the retainer, if it does you should not have any issues. After what I went through I would never consider running anything but a Manley or Ferrea keeper with an aftermarket retainer, stock valve or otherwise. YMMV

I am not sure what is so different about them vs stock lol... i think after market reatiners might have more angle to them, so the 7 deg keepers keep em in better? lol

I have the higher supertech springs, turbo ones? Had my machine shop set them all to 95-100lbs seat iirc

As it turns out the 5000 series Ferrea valves I have are not sufficient for a boosted application. Nor are the specs for Skunk2 Pro series valve springs.

Am going with Competition Plus valves and S10104 Dual turbo springs.

Brian - sorry for just getting back to you. I had a brain fart. I'm running dual Ferrea springs w/ the competition plus valves. Sounds like you plan on running what I have more or less, but I also went ferra TI retainers.

600 whp on a road race course for many events now without any issues. You won't be disappointed!

Where did you find this information? Ive emailed skunk2 & ferrea but waiting on responses.

I was looking at running the following for a boost build including the pro 1 camshafts

Ferrea 5000 +1mm Flat Valves
Ferrea Bronze Valve Guides
Ferrea Valve Seats
Supertech Dual Valve Springs
Supertech Titanium Retainers and Keepers
Supertech Valve Seals
3 Angle Valve Job
Port and Polished
New ITR LMA's

Skunk2 will only tell you to run their own springs. But you have to keep the intended application in mind, which is naturally aspirated. A turbo application is going to require more spring because of the added pressures on both sides of the head.

Gotcha, skunk reccomended to avoid oversized valves for fear of v2v contact. So went with a alaniz built head, skunk2 pro valves, supertech springs & retainers, supertech seals, stock ports w/chambers opened to 84mm. Should do well w/skunk pro 1's and some boost.

Thanks for the info, glad i read this thread!

Ferrea tech support says the stock locks will work fine by they are stamped steel and very weak. The Ferrea locks are recommended (of course). Both are 7*.
