Transferring video from camera to PC (Honda Challenge Video)
Begin Big Rant:
You would think that if one purchased a Sony "Digital" Video Camera that it would be simple to transfer said video to the PC. There is no info in any of the manuals on how to do that and no one that I have talked to knows how. A long time back I bought a video capture card that I believe was for capturing analog video. I never got the card to work though. However, I don't see why one would need such a card. Is not the inherent benefit of the camera being a "digital" video camera the fact that data can be easily transferred from the camera to the PC? AARGH!
I have really cool in car video of one of the CMP races with Chad spinning out in front of me but I never could put it online. I hope to tape the VIR races but will have the same problem. Does anyone have any idea how to do this? Thanks!

Chris, which model of camera do you have? Some cameras come with software and all you need to do is hook a FireWire cable to the pc and use the software to capture it... Other Sony models require a card that must go in the pc (sells for around $40 from Sony).
firewire card and some program to capture the video off the Cam
me TRV900 dvcam Sigg Firewire card adobe PREMIERE

Chris,
I am sure I can transfer your video for you. I will bring my laptop to VIR and we can try it out. Like they said you really only need a firewire and the correct software which comes with the firewire card if you buy one ($59 - $99) and lots of hard drive space.

All you need is a IEEE1394 (firewire, i-link, whatever), and any capturing or editing program.
I used to edit alot on my VAIO, and obviously that worked well (other than the stupid rendering limits). The other compu was with my junk compu with Ulead something program.

It is my roommate's camera but it is a DCR-TRV15 or something if that helps. I looked at the software that came with it but the only thing I saw remotely related was MGI VideoWave III which seems to have nothing to do with actually getting the video off the camera. There is a catalog that lists Sony accessories but none of them seem to have anything to do with retrieving the contents of the digital tape. There is this lame memory stick that enables you to create like 15 second mpegs or something useless. Hehe. There is all kinds of crap to get that 30 second mpeg onto the pc. I just don't get it. I guess I will look into this firewire thing and see if I can figure it out. It should not be this difficult though. If I could not get pics off of my digital still camera out of the box I would have been pissed.
i ahve a sony as well, if it has a memoery card all you have to do is play back the video on the camers and record it to the meory card. a 8mb card holds like 2min of video. get a 64mb card and you can get like 30-40 min on it
this is the easiest way tot do it

This is the easiest possible way you can transfer you videos into an .mpeg file and an MGI software included. Pick one up at Best Buy for around $60 bucks and all you need is your a/v jacks from your camcorder and a USB port on your PC.

I used the dazzle and a freeware program called virtualdub2. If you want to see an example of the quality you can go to http://www.zanvas.com/Keith and check out one of my videos from VIR. I believe the name of the file is Keith234. You have to right click and save as if you want to download.
just buy an internal firewire card from bestbuy, comp usa, any computer place. It'll be like $40. The trv-15 has firewire connections, not the analog kind they use on the dazzle.
What a coincident!!! I recently bought a FireWire card so I could make video files. The damn thing worked on the day I bought it, and installed it. Then I tried to download the clips from last weekend's auto-x'es at Buttonwillow, the damn thing didn't work. I tried pulling the card out, and re-installing it. It didn't work. It keep saying the the device isn't connected or something. I really don't know what to do now. I have a Sony DCR-TRV10 with i-link output. I might just return that piece of **** FireWire card!!!
www.apple.com will cure all!
