Overplayed Rear Wing Question (Karl, Scott, Drew???? HELP)
Ok I am thinking about removing my rear wing this weekend, However I was talking with WRXRacer111 about the functionality of the rear wing. ( Taking the OEM GSR wing off) My thought is this If the rear wing does not hold any function for my car seeing as it will only hit 130 mph. I am debating whether or not to keep the wing, My thought is this, if I keep the wing I am going to get an ITR wing (flame away) if I dont have to have one I am going to get rid of the thing. Let me know thanks guys. Here is the IM conversation that Chris and I had...well basically it was Chris was telling me...
WRXRacer111: there's a double edged sword to this
WRXRacer111: some ITR drivers have complained about the tail getting light at high speed
Importftr17: how so
WRXRacer111: ie, on track
WRXRacer111: under brakin
WRXRacer111: g
WRXRacer111: at least, George has mentioned the issue
WRXRacer111: so let's say that at 130mph, the Integra rear end naturally gets a bit light
WRXRacer111: my RS didn't have a wing
WRXRacer111: and I never felt the back end getting light (not like I would give a **** anyways, but that is beside the point)
WRXRacer111: it didn't have the power to push but say 121 or so on the North Course straight
Importftr17: scratchs head..
WRXRacer111: so that might've been one reason I never noticed the back end getting light
WRXRacer111: you should have more power down a long straight than I do, which might mean you COULD make the back end dance
Importftr17: well I am going to be taking this on the track...so I need function but if nothing is going to help than I am going to have nothing
WRXRacer111: so in summary... no wing on the RS might work because it's too slow anyways.
WRXRacer111: wing on a Type R, and it still might get a little light at 130mph
WRXRacer111: no wing on a GS-R MIGHT mean that the back end gets light
WRXRacer111: I'm not sure though, since I haven't had a wingless Integra up past 122 or whatever
WRXRacer111: at least, and then tried to brake it back down
TIA

I think the ITR wing adds some stability in high speed corners like the kink at CMP and the banks at Lowes.
In most other places it probably isn't making a difference.
No wing at all will definately result in a little more top end down the straights... less drag.

Well I really just dont knwo if it is worth it to have the wing or not, I can get an ITR wing for cheap through a friend of mine, I may just get it. But honestly I dont lke the wing, I was just wondering since I am going to be on the track with the car very shortly...
Thanks Scott...nice avatar by the way I heard I missed out on a great converstation on how that came about

Can I produce sources? No. But it was a legit publisher of some sort.
Oh well......fwiw.
From a totally "*** dyno" perspective, the TypeR spoiler doesn't seem to have hurt my top end at all. But as mentioned above, it seems to have stabilized the car somewhat.
If you compare the GSR and typeR spoilers, the ITR unit has a narrower construction and likely has less frontal area even though it is quite a bit taller than the GSR piece.
I believe the above referenced info was actually in Grassroots back when they tested the USDM market Type R in '98.
I don't know for sure though. My memory is fairly crappy.

<----still scratching head over what to do...but thanks for the input guys

Corey was trying to sell me on pulling off my rear wing. I was all set to do it, and then the car was so fizzucking wild at Roebling a few weeks ago I decided I'd leave it on.
My car dances around a little under braking but if that's the problem you're trying to solve, don't worry about it. It's not that bad. If the car dances so much under brakingthat you loop it, I suggest you have a problem with the brakes, not the aerodynamics.

I have no doubt that it's functional. I just struggle with the drag versus downforce thing.

umm.. out of ignorance/curiosity, may I ask if anyone messes with rear valences for their cars? If I recall correctly, there are some respectable downforce _and_ drag reduction to be had with a properly done rear valence. I guess my ignorance lies in the "are any of the available kits functional?" and "what results have people seen from actually using them on track?" department...
(If I remember correctly, function comes from smoothing the airflow from under the car to the back of the car, allowing the low pressure behind the car to more effectively communicate to the pressure under the car..)
anyway, just trying to throw out another option in the rear aero discussion..

Take it off, its to low, and blunt edged to do any good... Didn't notice any difference in my prelude.. 10lbs less weight and less drag is about it..
Never mind those rumours that Corey's been shopping for a custom-made, three-foot high wing for the Tank.
Never mind those rumours at all.
Never mind those rumours at all.
