Default Should I build a B20 all motor ? or choose another motor ?

Hey everyone, I'm back.

I found a 98 Hatch with a B20 swap in it. $4700

I wanna make it an all motor car.

I was wondering if it is better to build the B20 or buy another motor, like a B18 and build it up then drop it in ?

Not sure what direction to go in. I haven't ruled out going turbo.

I just like all motor cars.

go turbo, if not keep the b20 block throw a gsr or b16 head, but either way throw a vtec head on it,

Thanks.

If I go turbo ....what all do I need to do to prep the motor for turbo ?

Pistons, rods , clutch, axles ?

am I leaving anything out ?

Thats a very very loose question!

You can turbo a bone stock block, or you can spend thousands on the block itself.

Its all down to your power goal/reliability expectations really!

Yea i guess so, personally i would go b18 rather than b20 for turbo for the extra cylinder wall thickness.

300whp on a b18 would be relatively easily done

So is the B20 , a good candidate for all motor then ?

Put a V-tec head on it and build it up ?

I've never done any kind of build on a honda motor yet... But I've been wanting too.

I read the sticky on here about all motor

I'm just new so some of it doesn't sink in yet.

If I make this B20 all motor....where is a good place to start ?

pistons, rods, crank, cams, Vtec head, new intake manifold, and tune ?

Do a b20 vtec if you want to stay all motor. If you want to go turbo def go with the b18 its the best solid bottom end for boosting.

I had a b20 vtec built for all motor with nitrous and I had forged rods pistons and block guard for the bottom end and built the head with aftermarket cams cam gears valves retainers and dual valve springs. It was a daily driver and had a lot of power even without the spray and it handled like a champ. All motor and def more reliable then turbo.

THAT'S why I'm really leaning toward all motor. Because of the reliabilty.

I would like to drive it everyday.

But I guess it also comes down to the build quality and care taken during either build.

If it hasn't been done properly it won't hold up.

But I would like to make an all motor civic for sure.

Idk why this civic B20 is from Japan ...the person I talked to said they buy them from Japan with 50k miles on them.

That sounds kinda sketchy...unless there is something I don't know.

U got money to burn- cuz $5,000 is alot of money breh...

IMHO Go to the junk yard, pick up the block/engine you want, re-build it.
Buy a messed up trans, re-build it.
Buy a shell, drop engine in go.
Do your homework first. Save money and have a reliable car.

Good luck!

Hey everyone.

I found a nice hatch in Houston with a B20 Vtec ...Only 90k miles

But the guy is asking $6990

He said the lowest I could take it home for is $6220

I love the car and would love to get it. Its real clean and everything works on it. It looks to be in excellent shape. These are some of the mods listed.

HID Lights, Viper alarm, Pioneer flip out screen.

The guy bought it from a friend and the seller doesn't really know much about the motor. He told me it has larger injectors, header, exhaust, intake....but he doesn't know all of the details.

He said it hits Vtec at about 6k and revs to 9k

I'd love to get it but I wanna make sure its a good buy.

I also found another civic in Houston that has the LS motor in it. Its going for a pretty good price. Its a 94 and the guy is asking 4 but I think he'll go down.

I'd like to put a GSR head on it, or if anyone knows a better head to put on the LS I'm always open to opinions and advice !

So those are the two cars I'm looking at. I'd like to get one of them but I wanna make sure I make the right decision.

bro imo i always start with fully stock car and build my way up from there cuz in this game alot of people like to cut coners...but just pick a car that feels right for you

b20s are power houses i have a b20z non-v and for a fully stock motor with a b16 lsd tranny thing rips

Ok, it sounds like the LS civic I'm looking at is a good starting point.

All it has is intake and exhaust.

Its a 94 with a LS swap in it. No mods.

Fresh paint.

I would also like this other hatch, its a Stock B20 . I would like to get it but their asking 4700 idk how much their gonna negotiate on their price.

Ok cool man thanks for the advice.

I think the civic LS is worth about 3200....I don't wanna lowball though ...I was thinking about starting at maybe 2800

this is going to be your daily driver, you dont want to get to crazy w/ the build but at the same time you want some tq so you can move when you hit the pedal.

sell the b20 longblock and buy an h22 longblock and h2b kit. gonna be cheaper than building a complete motor and it will give you plenty of tq and a good bit of hp around 220. use the stock h22 header to start with and tune it on s300. you will need tuning anyway if you build a motor.

you can add a decent knockoff header and modify the stock intake manifold and drop in a set of pro1s. that will put you around 250whp which is where you would be w/ a built b20 but you will have more tq and more reliability w/ a completely stock bottom end plus it may even work out cheaper for you than building a complete b20...

its a no brainer to me

The red civic with the LS motor I wanted sold last night. I wasn't able to get to Houston until today. So that car is out.

The civic hatch with the B20 Vtec ....the guy wants 6200 and wont come down off the price any ...so the search continues !

I also found a nice civic hatch with 140k miles on it, the guys asking 3 but I offered him 2700 cash and he said no...so I'm still looking

i say turbo the stock b20 with a nice reliable turbo setup. if the b20 motor is in good shape to begin with.. then it really is your best/cheapest option for your power goals. maby look into a t28 turbo. you could def build a reliable little turbo set up and have 250-300whp. just do some research
