It was a dealer option when you bought the caR. Not sure if 97,98 you could but i'v seen it done on 00,01.

I never paid any attention to the windows before. If your R did have the vin etched, where would it be located at? Would it be on all windows or just a specific one?

No, its on every window. The idea is, the #s are entered into a national data base so if the car is stolen and recovered those #s can be traced and tracked.

This is pretty worthless on an ITR IMO. Its parts are still more valuable in pieces than the car as a whole. Once the windows are broken that acid etch would be easy to dispose of.

Confirmed here on a '97. When I noticed this, I thought it was sort of nice to know that all of my glass was original with the car, as all of my windows are VIN'ed with the same font/stenciling.

im pretty sure there is outside companies who can do that . so just because your windows are vind does not mean they are original

REDS: thats why I wrote 'same font/ stenciling'.
The chances of a new piece of glass being etched the same exact way, at a different location and time, would produce a different final result. You would be able to pick out the replaced glass.

I think that it is worthless since the VIN is on just about every part anyway.

Yes, almost every part is VIN'ed... now add the windows to the growing list of parts that are now worthless to a thief.

Thieves don't want to drive the car.

Thieves aren't after the glass, when they come-a-chop'in.

I am amazed that eleven years, after the last one was built, the parts are still in demand.

Its crazy the demand for parts, and a trend that is not going away soon.
I would say that the gommetless rear hatch glass for the wiper delete, which is '97ITR specific, is a generally highly sought after item.

Are you kidding? The same grommet can be bought for less than $20 and after 4 bolts are removed the wiper comes off. All the sudden ANY hatch could be this rare, sought after item you speak of. Hardly worth it for the reasons you are giving.

The purpose of this thread is to just to get an idea how (un)common, the VIN'ed glass is. It's a 'yes' or 'no' poll.

The poll for me is getting interesting; there are many more VIN'ed windows than I initially anticipated this early in the poll, almost 50/50 right now. I suspect that the non-VIN'ed windows will be more common, but how much would satisfy my curiosity.

Would I VIN the windows? Probably not, but this dealer option is part of ITR history, and that means I am interested.

Thanks for your posts.
