My car has been sitting for about 2 years now, as I was away for college. I asked my Step Dad to start the car up and take it for a spin once a week, which he never did. But I'm back from school now and the car backfires really bad out the intake. I can't figure out why. I did a fuel filter and put new gas in it; in hopes that it was just a bunch of water content in the gas. But the car still does it. It won't even hold an idle, it just dies. The car backfires at idle and through the rpm band. I was thinking that I need to do a valve adjustment, that maybe the intake valve is sticking open too long and that's why it backfires. And that would explain why it won't idle, cause if the intake valve is always open, it won't build up any vacuum to hold an idle. But where I'm lost is, the car ran fine when I left...so there is no reason why the valves should just go out of adjustment. Or there should be any mechanical failure for that matter.

If you guys can think of anything, it would be greatly appreciated. And at the very least, any input will help; I may be able to get my mind rolling on some other ideas. haha. Thanks guys!

 

timing belt jumped a tooth or dry rotted....and lost teeth...

 

check the dizzy, could be the icm

 

check timing and dizzy install

 

check your odometer and your little brother.....

Could it be that a critter or critters made a home in the exhaust system, creating backpressure? Usually this would just stall the car, but maybe also trigger a backfire.

 

my integra has been sitting for a few years as well. I cranked it up occasionally and it ran fine. then after a month or so,i went to crank it up and it would not start and it was backfiring out the intake as well.

what I had to do was re do the timing and the intake valves had stuck open so I had to lubricate the valve seals and work the valves up and down. the problem was solved after that. it was time consuming but that was the fix.

i would change plugs wires cap and rotor get some fresh gas then go from there
