Synchromesh worth a shot? Waste of time?
So my third gear grinds sometimes at high rpms especially wen I shift fast. A lot of people have said add a quart of synchromesh, my question is does it work is is it a wast of time and money??
Yea it's still driveable Im trying to hold off on a cheap tranny and go LSD as long as my casing don't blow like my last DA I will be good. Would u reccomend draining a quart of fluid then add the synchromesh or just add it? I will prob have to drain a lil atleast
My Prelude used to do this ALOT, make sure you don't let off the clutch until your positive its all the way in, not saying you do, but ya never know. Probaly just the synchros,.
I'm sure its the syncros almost every single Honda tranny I've seen has at least a slight grind
Trending Topics
defiently worth a try as the next step would be changing the syncros
never heard anythink bad about honda mtf
it's pricey but might stop the grinding since it's not so bad atm

i'd be weary with the syncromesh. from what i've been told, it tends to eat away at the brass syncros.
honda mtf is good stuff. if you want something thicker, i'd go with redline shock proof.

I love how you all rush to Honda MTF when it's just 10W-40 with an additive you can get your self for alot less then buying Honda MTF.
so from what i can see online you could spend $6.00 a quart for Honda MTF for a total of $18.00 to have enuff to ensure you fill the tranny
or you can go to the local parts store (in my area) and spend $10.00 and get 3 Quarts of 10W-40 and a bottle of Lucas oil additive.
1/2 QT of lucas and top off with 10W-40 and Whala. I have Honda MTF for almost HALF the Price Plus i don't have to drive to the dealer (23 Miles away).

had binding and 2nd gear grinding in my da after boosting the **** out of it for a couple of months. Drained the fluid and replaced with pennzoil synchromesh and never gave me a bit of trouble again or the dude I sold it too. Everything you post someone is going to have something negative to say. I tried it and it worked perfect. Maybe I was just lucky?

Also, even if it was $10....you're only saving $8. Not like you just found an industry changing money savings. You act like it's so painful to pay for MTF.
You said you found the $6/qt. deal online. So...no driving 23 miles and no tax (if it comes from out of state). You live 23 miles from a HONDA dealer?!! Pure insanity.
I'm nitpicking all this over a measly $8....more realistically a measly $1. With your method, you have to mix in 3 eyes of a newt, 5 livers of a chicken, and 2 ***** of a bull into your cauldron. With MTF, you just pour it in. $1 convenience fee.
Im also not convinced that it's 10W40. The stuff pours in SO easily. It's very thin. I'd be more liable to believe it was like 0W-something. All that is speculation. Where'd you find your information? Again, trusting the reliability of that info is not worth saving $1-$8. This post isn't even worth $1-$8.
I'm not going to mix oil with Lucas without knowing that all the additives and the viscosity is correct just to save $1-$8 and the ability to "stict it to the man". You don't change your trans oil every day. Even if you change it too often, you change it 2X a year. So with your method, you're saving $2-16 per YEAR! The trade off being that you have to research and rely on some method that is hard to be 100% sure of.
That's why we all "rush to buy MTF". Because the alternative isn't worth the trouble.
On a more important note, I can't believe y'all hoes buy your bubblegum for $1! All it is is tree sap. Buy a razor blade for 50 cents, and cut it out of any tree. Add in a grain or 2 of sugar/splenda. All that comes to 65 cents. BAM! I'm out of the poor house!
$10 on 3 qts. Of oil AND lucas additive? Surely you jest. I'm guessing the oil is around $3-4 per quart for dinosaur lube. That puts you between $9-12. Then the Lucas is probably like $4-5ish. Putting you at $13-17. Nope. Rather have MTF.

i had only heard this from an experienced transmission tech. never actually observed any issues myself. but then, i've never used it
i had a friend once say that if ever there was bottled magic it would be synchromesh lol. Why don't u take this opportunity to pull your tranny and throw a lsd and carbon synchros in it. or are u looking to just send it down the road.
Just keep in mind...no fluid is going to magically fix hard part damage. Most of the time a grind is worn sleeve, gear, synchro combo. Just depends on severity. A fluid change may mask you issue and is a bandaid fix. Its not going to magically make metal fix itself back to new.
