What should I do about my axles?
I have an 88 4dr manual and the outer joints are knocking pretty bad on turns if I'm not on the gas just right its not so bad when I'm cruising but I know they need replaced before they just break completely. My question is should I replace the whole assembly or just the outer joint? I don't have a lot of money to spare to replace the whole thing I'd probably go to Autozone to get them. Or I could order just the outer joint. Where can I get a decent set of the outer joints?
Since they are popping, you should replace the whole axle.
$50 for a remanufactured from VatoZone.
If it were just the boot then it might be a different story.
However, the labor required to change out a joint only is no joke.
The cost really isn't much different at that point - split boots SUCK so you should get a real boot and the $$$ tool to put the clamp on + the outer joint.

reman autozone $60 and lifetime warranty. sometimes you have to replace em 2 or 3 times to get a good one, sometimes you get a good one the first time. but if you are that broke that $60 is a stretch then that is the best bet since it is the cheapest.
i work at oreilly auto parts...reman. are $59 + core...new is $69...so for $10 more go ahead and get a new set...before i started working there i bought remaned axles and 1 split before i got 50 miles down the road...have a new this time around but havent changed it to due to lack of time since i have school work and to watch my kids
I think I'm going to go with the remans from autozone because ill be able the get them both for $40 off because of the credit I've saved and how much I'm going to spend
